About the Author

Kirk D. Hagen is a professor of engineering at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, where he has taught since 1993. He did his undergraduate work in physics and earned his PhD in mechanical engineering at the University of Utah. His areas of specialization are thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer. Introduction to Renewable Energy for Engineers is his fourth book. He is also the author of Heat Transfer with Applications, Heat Transfer Solutions: Worked Problems to Supplement a First Course in Engineering Heat Transfer, andIntroduction to Engineering Analysis.

Enlightening but academic!

After a very brief reference to Antiquity and the Renaissance, the authors present the history of suburban street lay-outs in the United States from the 19th century to the present. This overlaps to a great extent with the history of urban planning in general and is thus potentially greatly interesting. Unfortunately, the focus is strictly suburban and no mention is made, say, of Savannah's, Philadelphia's or New York City's famous street patterns.

The authors include a critique of neo-traditional grids, surprising arguments in favour of cul-de-sacs and a pledge in favour of shared streets.

Regrettably, the writing style is tediously academic and technical, with unnecessary long quotations and enumerations. Though the book is abundantly illustrated with plans and photos, the former are extremely small and the latter, in black and white, are poorly reproduced. Indeed, the graphics and lay-out are surprisingly bland given today's computer age expectations.

Overall, this short work appears like a collage of various academic papers and will be worthwhile only to those very highly interested in the history of suburban development in the United States.

excellent introduction to how residential streets evolved

This books describes the history and evolution of residential streets in the US and Britain. It remains very objective, until the last chapter when the authors push for the shared streets concept. As a transportation planning professional, I found it very informative and compelling. It did the impossible: it changed my mind on the value of cul-de-sacs.

This Is The Piano Instruction Book You Want

Let's start off with some assumptions:
You have bothered to spend the few weeks it takes to learn how to read music, even if only slowly.
You are mainly interested in playing pop music (rock, country, soul, r&b etc.) as opposed to jazz or classical (not that this book can't help you with the latter as well).
You have noticed that most song books have what are called lead sheets that only have a treble clef melody line with chord letters over the bars of music, and lyrics.
You have gotten far enough with your keyboard playing that you can play some basic chords with your left hand and a melody with your right hand. Which is all that most songbooks show you how to do.

You have realized that on the recordings you listen to professional musicians seldom play a straight out melody with their right hands, and almost never while the vocalist is singing. Any more than guitar players play a melody, but instead play more interesting chord patterns for accompaniment.
This is the book that teaches you to play the way professionals do. In 88 pages no less. To put it as simply as possible, learn how to read music then get this book as the only book you need to learn how to play keyboards. Just as snowplowing is a useless skiing technique once you learn how to turn stop on skis, simply learning to play left hand chords and a right hand melody is nearly as useless a technique for actually accompanying a singer.
I say 'nearly' because there are in fact times when playing the melody line is fitting, but as your only right hand technique is frustrating and being stuck in a rut. This book gets you out of that rut and gives you the tools to strike off on your own with no musical limitations to hold you back. Man am I happy I found it. In retrospect I would gladly have paid $100 or more for this book when I first started.

Excellent book - easy to follow

I played piano for over 40 years but couldn't tell one chord from another, I'd only learned to play from written music. This book explains basic chords, variations, inversions and more in a simple, straight-forward manner that makes using a fake book and improvising a fun challenge. It's also helpful in embellishing my current music. I'd highly recommend it! It's brought new life to playing piano.

Empowering book that breaks things down in a really easy to digest format.

I bought this book as optional reading material for a class I'm taking on assertiveness. Watch out world! just kidding.

The book is broken down into 6 main sections. For folks like me that like to get a handle on the big picture before diving in, I find the organization of the book to be superb. I understand where we're going and how we're going to get there.

The flow and cadence of the book is great too. Its one of those books where you cover a lot of ground quickly and is an "easy read" even though the material can bring about new insights and things to ponder about your own life, habits, communication style etc. And I like that its easy to pick up and put down so it can fit into my life too. One of the things that makes it so easy to translate into your life is the author uses very common real world scenarios...like little quips or scenes we've all likely heard or said before so it primes your mind to be receptive for what comes next.

All in all, I'm thrilled with the book and am looking forward to testing out the concepts in real relationships. Very empowering.

The Best Resource on Assertiveness Available

As a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist, I have a lot of clients whose primary issue is that they want to be more assertive in their lives. They feel too passive and not in control of their destinies. They are the people who say 'yes' when they want to say 'no', agree to do something for someone else when they are already maxed out, go to a movie they don't want to see because they are afraid of suggesting a different movie that they'd prefer seeing, etc.

Of all the resources available for developing assertiveness skills, 'Your Perfect Right' is the best one I have used. I have utilized it in individual therapy and in groups. I've used it with very high functioning people and with people who have chronic mental illness. It is helpful and pragmatic for every aspect of the population.

It will benefit people who want to work with the book alone and learn assertiveness skills for their daily lives. However, for people who feel that their passivity has already crated more problems than they feel they can contend with, I recommend that they contact a therapist and use this book in conjunction with therapy.

I first read this book around the mid-seventies. The book is an easy read that just makes sense. With practice, each year I become more assertive in all aspects of my life. I just bought three copies to give as gifts, to three very important young ladies. My hope is, that they find this book as helpful as I did.

Important book for coastal - and maritime engineers

Safety and reliability engineers responsible for the design of maritime structures can find in Goda's book all necessary background information for the probabilistic description of loads on those structures. No other book currently exists which gives such a complete overview of all methods to describe random sea waves, with particular attention to the extreme waves. This second edition (2000) contains a number of extensions w.r.t. the first edition (1985) and some sections have been rewritten. The reviewer especially enjoyed studying Goda's outline on correlation models between successive wave heights, marginal probability density functions of wave periods, and joint distributions of wave heights and periods of waves with narrow-band spectra.
