Excellent Guide To An Underrated Genre

Well, Euro fans, it's finally here. Mr. Howarth has given us Volume 1 of an excellent guide to the Italian Giallo covering the genre from its beginning in 1963 to the height of its glory in 1973. Each film is grouped together by year with full credits, a brief synopsis before the films review , information on the DVD-Blu-Ray releases of each film and important anecdotes on major actors and technicians for each title. The book is also generously illustrated with rare photos and color blowups of the movie posters and fotobustas of each film. What enhances the book is the user friendly manner in which the book is presented by giving people who are not familiar with the genre an in depth look of each title. I was amazed at how many films I have still not viewed, some of which have not seen the light of day since their release dates. The book begins with a nice intro by Giallo screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi on what constitutes a Gialo film, an excellent chapter by writer Roberto Curti (who is releasing a book on the Italian Gothic Horror Film this summer) on the Giallo from the pages of the paperback novellas to the screen, and a chapter of Giallo prototypes and some films which resemble the genre such as the German Krimi's and some which did not quite make the grade. The book is a revelation for fans and scholars alike and is highly recommended. I can't wait for volume two which will cover the years 1974 thru 2013 and will make this collection a wonderful Encyclopedia of one of the most underrated of Euro Genres. This seems to be the year for the Euro Horror Film finally getting its due with releases of these two volumes, Mr. Curti's book mentioned above and also his take on the Italian superhero genre and Mr. Stephen Thrower's book on the cinema of Director Jess Franco coming in May. Who would of thought? Bravo, Mr. Howarth, on a job well done.

The book giallo fans have been crying out for

The first of two tomes charting the giallo film from its inception to the present day, Volume 1 of Troy Howarth's SO DEADLY, SO PERVERSE: 50 YEARS OF ITALIAN GIALLO FILMS is the sort of book fans of the giallo have been crying out for. Its spiritual predecessor is arguably Adrian Luther Smith's excellent (if now surpassed) BLOOD AND BLACK LACE, and indeed structurally it owes a clear debt to that earlier book, but Howarth goes considerably further and into far more detail than that pioneering work.

Covering the first 20 years of the giallo film's lifespan, 1963 to 1973, Volume 1 begins with the expected introductions (provided by veteran giallo screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi) and attempts to define that most ambiguous of genres, before launching into an examination of early prototypical gialli, films with giallo elements but which don't quite make the grade as "true" gialli, and the literary gialli from which the filmic movement derives its name but to which it bears only a passing resemblance. This latter chapter, written by film historian Roberto Curti, is particularly insightful and breaks genuinely new ground. It provides the book with a unique selling point, charting an aspect of the giallo's development that hasn't been adequately explored elsewhere, since English-speaking authors lack the context necessary to unpick it.

The "meat and potatoes" of the book, however, is the 190 pages' worth of film reviews, cataloguing and appraising every known giallo to have been produced between 1963 and 1973. This section is truly exhaustive, digging up a number of titles I'd personally never even heard of, and even one or two that are now believed to be lost to the ages. For each review, the structure is the same: Howarth provides the main cast and crew credits, a brief (spoiler-free) synopsis and a more detailed review, concluding with a discussion of the careers of some of the more significant players on both sides of the camera. The reviews are insightful, in-depth and well-observed. Howarth isn't afraid to make it clear when a particular film isn't up to scratch (and says one or two scathing things about some of the, shall we say, less outstanding actors and directors associated with the movement), but he's also fair, pointing out the individual moments of pleasure that can be found in even the schlockiest and most ineptly made of giallo (and, let's be honest, there are quite a few which fit that category). The films of "big beasts" like Argento, Fulci, Bava and Martino understandably get the lion's share of the praise, but little-known gems also get their moment in the spotlight, including the likes of Fernando Di Leo's NAKED VIOLENCE and Damiano Damiani's A RATHER COMPLICATED GIRL.

It's worth pointing out that Howarth omits certain titles that some readers might expect to be included since he doesn't consider them to be part of the movement. This is unavoidable, since "giallo" is a vague term and much disagreement exists as to its precise parameters. Personally, I would have included Aldo Lado's SHORT NIGHT OF THE GLASS DOLLS (omitted here) and left out the likes of the western/giallo hybrid RINGO, IT'S MASSACRE TIME, but such is the beauty of a movement that, like film noir, is easier to recognise than to define (the "I know it when I see it" principle).

Any flaws are minor and don't impact substantially on the overwhelmingly positive qualities of the book; however, I feel that they should be acknowledged for completeness' sake. These are largely structural, stemming from the decision to separate the films by year of release and order them alphabetically within each year. This results in some slightly odd moments in that individual reviews often "refer forward" to another film that was actually released before the one currently being discussed -- for instance, we read about Sergio Martino's second giallo, THE CASE OF THE SCORPION'S TAIL, before his first, THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH (both 1971), which is slightly confusing given the extent to which the latter set the template for Martino's subsequent gialli. That's perhaps the downside of attempting to read a reference tome like this from cover to cover. However, the lack of any page references in the index of titles at the end, and the fact that production dates aren't provided in the reviews themselves (the year is listed only once, at the start of each "section"), makes it difficult to dip in and out.

But these are minor organisational quibbles. In his foreword, Howarth acknowledges that he didn't set out to write the be-all-and-end-all book about the giallo, and while it doesn't replace the likes of Mikel Koven's excellent LA DOLCE MORTE (which addresses a different audience and serves a different purpose), SO DEADLY, SO PERVERSE feels entirely at home among such lofty company. Experienced giallo aficionados and those new to the genre alike will want to pick this up without delay, and get their pre-orders in for Volume 2, which promises to explore the rather more sporadic output of the last 40 years.

Troy Howarth's So Deadly, So Perverse is a great addition to the world of giallo cinema writing. I've seen a slew of giallo films and I can definitely say that the book is very useful and informative for the seasoned veteran and beginner alike. Mr. Howarth spends some time going over the origins of the genre before jumping into thoughtful reviews. He gives some background into the major players of each film and perhaps even more importantly does not spoil the films. That bears repeating: He does NOT spoil the films. I've actually been burned by some books spoiling who the killer is. No need to worry here. Haven't seen The Black Belly Of The Tarantula? Fear not and read on in confidence that Mr. Howarth will not reveal the identity of the killer. Lots of photos, great spoiler free reviews, and a love of the genre come through in this book. I look forward to volume 2. Highly recommended.

This is a good book for Hotel operations and management, but I liked, "Check-in Check-out" better. This book is a soft cover and does not have any color photos. "Front Office" has some good content, but the book could be improved with added color.

Larry Hama returns to his original series with all-new stories!

From 1982 to 1994 Larry Hama wrote the legendary "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero!" series published by Marvel. The series stopped with #155. (These issues are currently being reprinted in the "Classic G.I. Joe" trades by IDW.)

Fast-forward to May 2010. IDW released #155.5 as a freebie for "Free Comic Book Day." Here Larry Hama picked up the story right where he had left off over 15 years earlier. In July 2010 the series officially reopened with #156, and has been going strong with new monthly installments since. Same writer, same continuity, same issue numbering - this is the definitive continuation of the classic Marvel run!

This trade collects #155.5 thru #160, and is called "volume 1" because these are the first issues published by IDW that continue the original Marvel story.

The Joe team has been disbanded, and Cobra attempts to hunt some of the key members (Hawk, Duke, Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Roadblock, Stalker, Mainframe, Rock N Roll) down. The Joes reunite and strike back. Great stuff!

I gave this volume 4 stars because #157 and #160 drag a little and the art isn't the best I've seen for G.I. Joe. I don't mean this as a slam against Augustin Padilla, but I just feel that his style isn't right for this genre. (However, starting in #161 SL Gallant took over the art chores and his work is PERFECT. His amazing work will be featured in the next trade, but sadly not in this one.) Despite my complaints this volume is over all a total blast to read. Nobody writes the Joes like Hama!

For #156 and forward each issue has been printed with three cover variations, one of them being a sketch by Larry Hama. (The Hama sketch covers are difficult to find.) This trade features an excellent cover gallery in the back where we get full page reproductions of all three covers for #156 - #160. Very cool - especially the Hama sketch covers.

To have Larry Hama back on his original Marvel story-line is a dream come true! YO JOE!

A refreshing update to a classic tale

I have recently started to collect the classic GI Joe comics from the 1980's run. I recommend these stories to anyone reading this review. A year or two ago, IDW (the current publsher of the GI Joe comics) asked Larry Hama, the writer and part-time illustrator of the classic series, to come back and publish new stories set in the GI joe universe of the classic comics,as a result we got GI Joe a Real American Hero.

This is the first volume of this new series, and it kicks it off pretty well. After reading this volume I am going to be collecting them all as they come out.

In my opinion, GI Joe A Real American Hero, is the perfect blend of classic 1980's comic book writing and modern art. It is great to see a modern comic book story with all the classic Joes just the way I remember them when I was a kid.

I introduced my 11 year old son, to both the classic series, and this relaunch, and he likes the relaunch better. I think this new series does a great job of introducing GI Joe to a new generation, without compromising the integrity of these characters.

In short this series does a great job of bridging the gap between 1986 and 2012. For a GI Joe fan, this would be my recommendation, if you were limited to reading only one of the modern era GI Joe comics. Well, now you know, and knowing is half the battle. Yo Joe!

Maybe you can't go home again

I was over the moon when I heard that Larry Hama was returning to GI Joe and picking off exactly where he left off in the 1990s. His GI Joe run from the 80s and 90s is one of my favorites of all time and I've been enjoying the IDW reprints.

I know this opinion won't be popular but the first volume falls far short of the original run.

The premise is great, after Cobra stages terrorist attacks the U.S. declares martial law and hires 'security contractors' like Arbco Systems and Coordinated Order By Righteous Americans (one guess who they really are) to keep the peace. It's a brilliant combination of right wing and left wing paranoia and hands Cobra their greatest victory yet. Soon Cobra troopers in full uniform are shooting people in the streets.

But the execution is just sloppy. In the first few pages we have General Hawk shooting a policeman in the face. Sure he's a Cobra-controlled cop, but still it's a distasteful way to start. Later Roadblock hacks up several government agents (yeah, yeah, Cobra-loyal agents) with a meat cleaver. It's implied that Stalker tortured a Cobra trooper off-camera. Everything feels just too grim and dark, and not at all fun.

And then the interesting scenario is wrapped up in just a few pages with no real impact.

Agustin Padilla's art is also ill suited for Hama's usual stories. He often draws the Joes superhero-style standing in the open charging right into enemy fire. Other artists drew them more like real-world soldiers, taking cover, choosing their shots carefully. At no point does it feel like the Joes are in danger, their main complaint is running low on ammo.

If this was the only book I bought I would have dropped the series. Fortunately with book 2 things pick up nicely. Hama rediscovers his sense of humor, we see some of the gadgets and vehicles come back and the art improves nicely. Book 1 is not bad but really fell short of the original run.

An interesting look at the economy, politics, and how we can do better

Robert Reich, while defending the underlying principles of capitalism, argues we can improve upon it, structure it better so rather than it heading for a self-destructive cycle, it can serve a far greater percentage of the population. The key is to look past some of the blinders we're wearing, examine what is really going on (and the myth of the free market) and find ways to strengthen both capitalism and the overwhelming percentage of the population the current skewing of it disenfranchises.

The key points are:

1- There is no such thing as the free market. Actually, this is a point I've been making for a while. There have to be rules. Imagine if I owned a vase shop and in order to get more business I smashed all my competitors' vases. Why not do that? Seems practical. Because we can't just do whatever we choose; we have laws. A credit card company can't allow a business to run a change then decide it's not going to turn over the money. We have laws. So once we acknowledge the market is governed by laws, and that those laws are needed for the market to function, the question becomes one of what those laws should be.
2- Those who praise the "free market" as it stands are those who benefit most from it. That's just human nature.
3- Economic and political power are linked.
4- When the wealthy can influence not just economics but politics, the trust upon which capitalism depends erodes.
5- The notion that people earn what they are worth is a dangrous fallacy.
6- The increasing power of the upper class comes at the expense of the power of the working and middle classes, and the issue is of politics, not economics.
7- The great divide now is not on political party lines, but between the establishment and the rest of the country.
8- We need a countervailing force that can realign the market to distribute income more evenly. (Here as an aside I'll point out that this happened when wages went up during WW II, which many consider a reason we did not go fall back into the Great Depression when the war ended.) It also must develop market rules to counter globalization and disruptive technology. (Here I'll argue it's better to embrace the technology and use it for maximum good. Ned Ludd lost.)

If you're a staunch Democrat, you'll cheer this book. If you're a staunch Republican, you'll curse a blue streak. If you're just curious, and you read this with an eye to analysis, you'll find some things questionable and some of worth and more than enough to decide if you wish to delve further. There certainly is enough here that is worthy of consideration.

A big economics lesson in a small package

Robert B. Reich’s Saving Capitalism is a comprehensive look at how economics and politics combine in the US to produce economic inequality. Reich debunks the myths that the uber-rich perpetuate about the free market, as well as many other misperceptions about economic issues. His main thesis is that it’s not about free market versus big government as a host of conservative politicians and their wealthy backers would have you believe, but about creating a market economy that further enriches the top 1% versus one that is designed to benefit the majority of citizens.
Reich manages to remain mostly apolitical in his book, focusing on the things that people of all political persuasions can do to improve their lives and benefit the country at large—something all too many of our current crop of politicians fail to do.
Saving Capitalism: For the Many, Not the Few by Robert B. Reich/Key Takeaways, Analysis & Review by Instaread is another great introduction to a book that many lay readers might be reluctant to purchase. The overview and analysis of the book’s key takeaways removes much of the mystique, and just might entice people to want to read it. I know it did for me.

The InstaRead version appears to discredit the valuable book "Saving Capitalism"

I found the original book “Saving Capitalism” to be a seminal book, regarding the powerful influence of special interests on Congress, and that the wealthiest own a rapidly growing percentage of the economy. At the same time, the middle class has not significantly improved financially since the 1970’s. This is not healthy for the United States. The optimism for the future is being replaced by concern how we will make a living, for ourselves and our children.

The book is named “Saving Capitalism for the many not the few”.

The book elucidates a spectrum of ways the laws and regulations of the market place have changed, over the years, to favor the top 1 percent, often creating an income redistribution, from the middle class, upwards to the top classes. The power of the book is in the examples, information and clarity of discussion.

Unfortunately, the InstaRead version provides an approximate copy of the conclusions of the book, without any the information supporting these conclusions. For brevity, the conclusions are not written in the way Reich wrote them, and much is lost in subtle ways. Reading the InstaRead version sounds more like the Communist Manifesto, than a brief version of the book. The book is entitled Saving Capitalism, and the book supports capitalism, supports rewarding innovation. The InstaRead version has none of the information or power of the book, and, in my opinion, would promote disregarding the book as liberal propaganda.

Robert Reich notes that our political discourse frequently centers on the debate between free market and big government. Reich points out that this discussion is actually meaningless, since there is no market place, without the rules and regulations created by government. The moneyed interests wish to keep this debate going, while they quietly lobby the government to continue to change the rules of the market to their favor, and they usually get what they want.

Saving Capitalism reminds us that the United States was in a similar situation in 1900, when monopolies concentrated wealth to the top, crushing their competition, creating fabulous wealth for the few, while their workers lived very poorly. Teddy Roosevelt lead the fight to save capitalism back then. The book shows what can be done now to save capitalism again for the many, not the few.

My guess is that it takes, on average, about a year for genuine intimacy and closeness to develop between new friends, unless the two of you share some sort of extreme experience (e.g., getting kidnapped together at gun-point by terrorists, getting trapped in an elevator for hours during an earthquake, fighting side-by-side in the trenches of a faraway war, talking on ecstasy for ten hours straight at a Baltimore rave, etc.). By contrast, if you’re sleeping with the same person, you can attain the same level of intimacy in less than two weeks! That’s why I tell students in my “Love and Friendship” class that sex is love’s fast-forward button. Whether you like it or not, the two of you are going to get very close, very fast: it’s inevitable and irresistible (if you’re normal)—only the sociopathic seem capable of resisting its siren song. The feelings we develop for someone we’re sleeping with are real and powerful and intense, as is the attachment, the craving, and the newfound neediness. One day you wake up and realize—perhaps to your horror—that your connection to this person has—seemingly overnight—come to constitute a kind of natural fact, like gravity, climate change, tropical hurricanes, and the Montreal winter. And, like all natural facts, it can’t be explained away by simplistic Sex-and-the-City sophistry. We forget this at our peril.

A Gold Mine of Wisdom

It was like unlike something I've ever read before. A collection of real insights that could be deemed philosophical, yet it didn't bore me to death and didn't gleam with academia. These insights felt personal and amicable with a hint of pretentiousness that gave it a feeling of realism. It felt like reading a personal journal at some times, with many down to earth observations but also with many abstract and beatnik references that I'll admit took me a while to understand. Yet, my favorite aspect of the book is how it is written very concisely, with a style that breeds to make every sentence count and feel short and sweet. Within each story in the book, you encounter a tidbit of wisdom that forces you to see life through another's eyes and it kept me awake for many nights, thinking and pondering. When the book is finished, you get to the About the Author page, yet from what you already have read, you feel you already know John as you finish feeling you've been listening to a friend for the past 200 pages.

His writing style opens a parenthesis to be real with yourself, making you question the past with a balm of love and understanding. Through the reading of his works, he helps you strive for the ideal of the philosopher: “The philosopher just acknowledges the error, and calmly corrects course. Criticism is, after all, for the Socratic, merely information. Nobody fears making a mistake less.”pg. 155. In the end, if you are someone who seeks the beauty of this world and the good that can come from misfortune, this book is for you.

How would you write a love letter to an intellectual? Written in a warm, engaging and humorous style, Hamer's new book is in many respects an open love letter to a woman of superior intelligence. But it's also a book with a clear moral purpose: to justify love. It's a book that draws you in easily and lets you pause, since it is broken up into short linked chapters that nevertheless stand alone as pieces. It's a book for the metro, or those moments of unpredictable waiting. We think we're on a boat tour, but we're actually just floating. We're not sure where we're going, and in the end we don't care. The thesis of the book is not a destination but an aura: love is worth the effort.
