Great overview

I bought all the volumes of Frederick Copleston's "A History of Philosophy" that were available at the time more than four decades ago and have added the ones that have come out since. During the intervening years I've used it more than any other of the histories of philosophy I have in my library. Copleston's discussions are detailed but at the same time are quite easy to read and provide a great overview of a philosopher or a movement from which even a philosophical novice will benefit. While understanding a philosopher adequately includes reading the primary source material, Copleston's history of philosophy renders an important service in that it provides a framework within which to study a philosopher in more depth.
