In When Things Fall Apart this head of a Tibetan monastery in Canada outlines some relevant and deceptively profound terms of Tibetan Buddhism that are germane to modern issues. The key to all of these terms is accepting that in the final analysis, life is groundless. By letting go, we free ourselves to face fear and obstacles and offer ourselves unflinchingly to others. The graceful, conversational tone of Chodron's writing gives the impression of sitting on a pillow across from her, listening to her everyday examples of Buddhist wisdom.

Pema Chodron, a student of Chogyam Trunpa Rinpoche and Abbot of Gampo Abbey, has written the Tibetan Buddhist equivalent of Harold Kushner's famous book, When Bad Things Happen to Good People. The readings allow us to reconnect with a truth already known or to find a new way of looking at everyday chaos. Throughout, we are shown basic Buddhist beliefs and given instructions in discovering one's true nature through asking questions, facing one's fears, and dealing with the present. The instructions can be taken as meditations, affirmations, or simple reminders of how to transform our minds and actions into nonaggression, which benefits ourselves and society. Not just for Buddhists in Crisis

I am not a Buddhist but I believe that many of the Buddhist practices are key to living a peaceful life. I give this book to everyone I care about. Pema reminds us that life it is impermanent for all living things. She reminds the reader that we have no control over the fact that the sun rises and sets, people live and they die, that during our lives we will experience joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, triumph and defeat and that each day is different than the last. The human condition typically drives us to cling to and fight for permanence in an effort to feel safe. That clinging and struggling to make life "stay put" is a losing battle. Pema eloquently leads the reader through the Buddhist principles that she believes make the journey easier to travel. Her wisdom is written in simple, everyday language. I highly recommend it for anyone, Buddhist or not.

Not for the nonspiritually inclined

With the deaths of the two people closest to me within 4 months of each other, it's easy to see why I found this title appealing. Although an atheist, I truly approached this book with an open mind and hopeful heart. Yes, the author writes in an engaging, conversational style. But as the chapters went on, I tired of the logical fallacies. The ultimate message, that everything except the present moment is impermanent and meaningless anyway, failed dismally to assuage the grief and doubt I'd been experiencing. Aside from the conversational presentation, this is just another Buddhist Way book. There actually wasn't much that I could specifically apply to dealing with bereavement, which was why I got it to begin with. It might do something for you, but not for this atheist. PS: Please, let this review NOT start any religious arguments, I scorn no one's beliefs, all I am saying is that this particular worldview was not helpful to me in my situation.

Helpful and insightful but at times frustrating

This book is filled with insights on how to get beyond that incessantly babbling parrot we call the conscious mind, to stop clinging to our life stories, what Eckhart Tolle might call the content of the mind, and to connect with our real self. In doing so we connect with, well, everything.

The frustrating part of this read for me, though, is that Pema often uses a unique vocabulary to describe the ideas she wants to get across, and to me it's not always clear what she means. It's not that she's using esoteric Buddhist terminology--I'm thinking that it's either just the way she expresses herself, or maybe the followers of Trungpa Rinpoche share a common vocabulary through prolonged contact with him and each other. I'm reminded of Darwin's finches, evolving separately from their kin in isolation in the Galapagos.

In any event, there were a number of times when I wasn't sure I got her meaning. I read each troublesome passage a few times and made my best interpretation, but I really can't be sure what I understood is what she meant. My personal feeling is that she'd reach more people if her language was a little more generic, for lack of a better word, or if she defined some terms. It's not that she should "dumb down" her explanations--not at all. I just think at times she could have done a little better job of writing to her audience. And to be fair, at times her writing is very clear and compelling--no easy task considering she's tackling a subject that, at its core, goes beyond words.

All of that said, this is still definitely a worthwhile read. It's not just about any one concept or method, it's a comprehensive set of practices to free yourself from attachment to the false, surface layer, ego driven self in order to reach the real you--the you who can experience true joy that's not contingent upon your situation, not contingent upon money, status, getting what you want or finding that "special someone".

I also liked how she makes it clear that none of these practices will make pain, fear or the ordinary troubles/emotions of life go away. What they will do is allow one to feel all of life fully without becoming attached. How often do we add to our misery by living in the past, replaying it over and over again, embellishing, adding commentary--letting the small snowball roll down the hill until it's big as a house?

I've read a number of other books that cover roughly the same territory, each with its own slant and style. I'm glad to have found this book because, despite the occasional difficulties ciphering her meaning, I really feel it has a great deal to offer and has moved me forward in my personal journey.
