Superb for basics in education

I used this text this past semester for a psychology class entitled "Psychological Development and Classroom Processes," and I must say that I can already tell that this book will be an invaluble tool for my future as an educator! It goes over so many basic principles, encourages interaction with the topics covered, and is set up in a way that early parts lead nicely into the later chapters, unlike in some other educational psychology books I've looked at. Covering everything from behavioral learning, to classroom management and beyond, this is a book that every educator should own.

Great Perspective

This book gives a very good idea of the value of educational psychology. Sternberg shows an excellent ability to teach through this book, and the way it is organized is superb. The research is up to date, and relevant.

I believe it is a great buy for both introduction and deeper reflection into how the mind learns.

This text book had a ton of useful information, however I had to make myself read it. It wasn't fun to read and there wasn't much to look at. The text was small and squished on the page. On the bright side it covers different areas of education and how expert teachers would handle a situation compared to a novice teacher just entering the field.

Mis-named?

The principles espoused are terrific mind sets for leaders and groups, yet are simply common sense for relationship building. The primary message is to put the relationship first, and through enhanced trust all obstacles (essentially fear) melt away. However, I was looking for more practical supports for linguistic change, and I didn't find it. Leaders most in need of trust building exercises are those who have never experienced what these conversations sound like, and unfortunately they will not learn it here. They will be reminded of the principle of sharing and discovering, (relationship building), but only one small paragraph actually provides linguistic samples of actual conversations. This book has very little in the way of example conversations, but more in the way of example meeting strategies. Leaders can't utilize language skills they don't have, and regrettably I found no assistance here.

Could have been written shorter ...

To be fair, this book puts together excellent frameworks for setting up productive co-creating conversations in a structured way. The 3 levels of conversation, the dashboards, the 5 brains, the TRUST model, the FORCES model, etc., are all useful framing of some commonsensical but powerful body of knowledges that work towards building great conversations and trust. Judith provides some great examples and cases of conversations for each model that she has worked with actual clients that illustrates the concepts. But I give a three stars because the book is too lengthy, with multiple repetition of the same points written over and over again, even within the same chapter. I certainly appreciate the power of reinforcement, but when it come across as a "collection of separate lectures" rather than a unified production of coherent thoughts, I would expect a book written on "intelligence" to be produced with strong writing intelligence.

This book is full of key concepts every leader should know and practice, packaged in easy to understand and implement language and graphics. Initially I was put off by the title, thinking it was a play off of similar terms like Emotional Intelligence. But it's much more than that. Read it, you'll be glad.

The BEST obstetrical book EVER!

I used this book in the 1990's during nurse midwifery school and it was my favorite text. As an author and professor, I could no longer use the book as it had not been republished for some time. I was beyond thrilled when I saw it was updated. I was not disappointed! This is what I personally consider the "Bible of Obstetrics". It is concise, extremely readable, and includes crucial content without erroneous information and fluff. The new colored drawings are beautiful and the content is well laid out. They include statistical information and precise headings that make looking up content fast and easy. I have an extensive library of obstetrical textbooks and need to purchase the most current versions for textbook writing purposes; however, this is really the ONLY book you need. I often give students a short list of books I would take if I was on a deserted island and needed references to look up information. This is #1 on my list! Great revision!!

Packed full of easy to read information

This book is a great supplement to Varney's. Oxorn-Foote has great, easily legible, full-color illustrations (though I do question proportions in them sometimes) of many obstetric variations and complications. The layout of the book, with bold heading graphics and colored margin tabs, makes it easy to find what you are looking for. I also enjoy the writing style. To wit, this on shoulder dystocia:

"Usually equanimity forsakes the attendants. They push, they pull. Alarm increases. Eventually by greater strength of muscle or by some infernal juggle the difficulty appears to be overcome, and the shoulders and trunk of a goodly child are delivered."

My only beef with the book is that it is very much old-school OB about presenting all graphics as if the woman is in lithotomy. If you want to visualize side-lying or hands and knees though, just flip the book around. Oh, and it doesn't mention the Gaskin maneuver by name, merely calling it "all fours."

I'm a doula and pre-nursing student, and as I attend births I often leave with questions. I got an inexpensive used copy of this book as a way to become more familiar with the medical side of labor and birth, and it more than does the job. It's overkill for someone in my position, and yet absolutely fascinating and informative. In depth anatomy, physiology and practical medical information about labor and birth is presented in a concise, understandable, and thoroughly illustrated format.

I don't expect to ever read it straight through (unless it is required reading in school somewhere down the line) and the practical advice isn't anything I am in the position to use, but it's an interesting addition to my reference bookshelf as I try to sort out and understand for myself the medical side of what I see/hear at births.

It considers the spatial results of two diametrically opposed policies: planning from above to settle the North African and Asian newcomers in the 1950s, and planning by market forces for immigrants from the former Soviet Union in the 1990s. Unlike other books on immigration, Country on the Move also analyzes internal migration within Israel, which is an outcome of the regional disparities produced by immigration. Moreover, it compares the empirical findings in Israel with international trends, and its analysis can serve as a foundation for setting spatial immigration policy.

This book recounts the extraordinary and often bloody story of how tens of thousands of ordinary blacks overcame long odds to dethrone segregation, to exercise the right to vote and to improve their economic standing. Their civil rights movement required unfathomable courage and persistent agitation, during which many activists sacrificed their homes, jobs and lives.

Written in a lively and accessible style, the book:

Great Primer

I just found this book in the new book shelves at the university library. What a find! This book is a perfect primer for someone wanting to learn about the early Civil Rights Movement in the USA. It is also perfect to use in the classroom. The margins are filled with information about the various key players. The author also included a timeline, important documents, a list of important key figures in the movement, and other useful matter.

This book is useful for teachers who teach: American History, Civil Rights, Social Movements, African American History, and American Politics. The book is written well and is not filled with academese. It's an engaging read about a pivotal point in the history of the US.

Great Book!!!

The book is great for getting a very detailed account of the history of the civil rights movement. The terms and the timeline are also very helpful and things that you won't find so clearly laid out in other books.

There are some verbs and descriptions that the author uses too loosely, as though he were there at the historical events about which he's speaking, but it doesn't really matter because you will most likely be reading the book for the historical facts and terminolgy.

It's an easy read and a book that you should keep so that you can go back to it for research and just in general.

This book was very good with lots of information it was a bit sad to see how people treated african americans back then thank god we overcame i dont think i could live like that in todays time we owe alot to the movement
