About the Author
Keith Cummings is a distinguished glass artist and retired head of the Glass Department at Wolverhampton University, U.K., where he remains Reader in Research Studies. He has contributed to a number of publications, and his glasswork appears in public and private collections around the world. His book A History of Glassforming, a classic in the field, is also available from the University of Pennsylvania Press.

Solid overview on kilnforming

I've got both this and the previous edition of Cumming's book in my collection. The author has plenty of hands-on experience and a broad knowledge of many glass techniques and processes. I wouldn't call this a hands-on, step-by-step tutorial in studio technique but it will certainly get you started.

A must for glass artists and anyone interested in glass as a material.

Keith Cummings has produced a comprehensive book on the subject of kiln forming glass. It shows many aspects of the processes involved interspersed with examples of works from both the modern and ancient world. Glass, a most technical and demanding material both in resource use and exacting processes, is demystified by the clear text and illustrations. The reader will gain valuable knowledge as well as a new respect for ancient artists who worked glass to a very high level of expertise and beauty. With so few books on the subject of glass this one is at the top of the pile for "information gold" and with plenty of color photographs to show of some of the many beautiful results that can be achieved. Glass can be seen as a material that reflects the high points of human endeavor and the book shows the diverse areas through history where this has occurred in a well researched way. In general a mix of how to and a survey of what can and has been done with glass in the kiln forming universe. Part reference book and part special interest subject or simply if you were curious. I still dip into the pages to absorb more interesting facts.

Not what was ordered.

The book I received does not appear to be the same book that I ordered. It has the same author, but without being able to see into the book, just judging by the cover, it wasn't the same book. The book I received was quite good, although much of what was written was a rehash of a couple of other books on the same subject that I already have. Notwithstanding the forgoing I am not regretting adding it to my library.

Fantastic Reference - Not Just for Quality Engineers

This is a well-written encyclopedia of software engineering best practices. Linda Westfall has done an amazingly good job of presenting the broad field of software engineering practices clearly and concisely. In a subject this vast, packed into about 600 pages, you might expect to see fine print and terse explanations. Not so. The font size and white space are generous and there is typically one illustration per two pages. The writing quality is excellent - it is engaging and informative, not dull, dry or dummied-down. With its good balance of readability and information, this book is a great reference for not just software quality engineers but also for managers, software developers, technicians and students.

I am a software developer, not a quality engineer, and I am mid-point in studying toward a Master of Software Engineering degree. This book will be valuable to me as a resource for discussing software engineering methodology with the engineers and managers I work with. One of my fellow engineers, a quality engineer, successfully used this book and its practice exams to prepare for the Certified Software Quality Engineer test offered by American Society for Quality.

As I wrote this review I pulled down and considered two books from my shelf: Software Engineering 8 by Ian Sommerville, and Software Quality Engineering by Jeff Tian. Those were both textbooks in my Software Engineering graduate curriculum. If I were to thin out my bookshelf I would discard those two books and keep Linda Westfall's.

Outstanding Resource for CSQE Examination and Career

What an amazing, comprehensive guide and preparation for the ASQ CSQE examination! This vast compilation of topics and techniques is simply fantastic. After three separate, intensive readings and much study of the book, the magnitude of topics and details that the book provides still surprises me.

Furthermore, the writing is so accurate and clear. Having read many other books on business process management and software development, this book surpasses others via the clear, understandable presentation of diverse topics. In regard to succinctness, nearly every word provided value and education.

Even with 20 years of software and project management experience, I gained NEW significant insights into:
a) creating quality plans,
b) understanding the criticality of requirements engineering and management,
c) understanding software metrics (KLOC, function points, and complexity),
d) planning and designing test plans (especially coverage strategies),
e) seeing the importance of reviews and inspections, and
f) understanding the protection of software configuration management.

Without knowing the author or the Westfall Consulting team, this book prepared me to pass CSQE examination by the American Society for Quality in October 2012.

I will value this book in my collection and professional career for years to come.

This is a two part review:
The first part is about the book as a physical item. The edition sold was a pirated copy from India marked "not for sale in the USA". When I was in graduate school it was common to see such books in the hands of foreign students. The text was a word for word copy printed in books with very thin paper with sloppily made covers. But since the text was word for word, they were very usable for a course or two. But not for reference. I do not think that the book I have will hold up to extended use. (I bought from: Maple_Leaf_Books.)

Second part is the book itself, the part that Ms. Westfall is responsible for. I have been to one of her live training and some video recorded ones, and the book follows her lecture material. As a beginning Software QA person for a government agency that is responsible for a large number of very visible projects, this has been the starting point for my training, and I recommend it. It has allowed me to come up to speed in a sort time.

About the Author
STEFAN KOSTKA

Holds degrees in music from the University of Colorado and the University of Texas and received his Ph.D. in music theory from the University of Wisconsin. He was a member of the faculty of the Eastman School of Music from 1969 to 1973. Since that time he has been on the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Kostka initiated courses in computer applications in music at both the Eastman School and the University of Texas. More recently he specialized in courses in atonal theory and contemporary styles and techniques, interests that led to a second book, Materials and Techniques of Post-Tonal Music. Dr. Kostka is active in various professional organizations and is a past president of the Texas Society for Music Theory.

 DOROTHY PAYNE

Held both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance and a Ph.D. in music theory, all from the Eastman School of Music. She was on the faculty of the University of South Carolina from 1994 until 1998. Former administrative positions include those of Dean at South Carolina, Director of the School of Music at the University of Arizona, and Music Department Head at the University of Connecticut. Prior faculty appointments were held at the University of Texas at Austin, the Eastman School of Music, and Pacific Lutheran University. Dorothy presented lectures and workshops on theory pedagogy at meetings of professional societies and served the National Association of Schools of Music as a visiting evaluator, member of the Accreditation Commission, and Secretary of the Executive Committee. Dorothy Payne passed away in 2010.

BYRON ALMÉN

Holds a bachelor’s degree in music and physics from St. Olaf College, a master’s degree in piano performance from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in music theory from Indiana University. He has been a member of the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin since 1998. He is the author of A Theory of Musical Narrative and the coauthor, with Edward Pearsall, of Approaches to Meaning in Music, both published by Indiana University Press, along with numerous articles and book chapters. He is the winner of several teaching awards, including the prestigious University of Texas System Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award. In addition to his continued performing activities as a pianist and organist, he is active in professional organizations in music, semiotics, and psychology. Dr. Almén teaches courses in the undergraduate harmony sequence, as well as courses in music theory pedagogy, the history of music theory, and score reading.

Dorothy Payne currently runs ArtInternationale Gallery in San Francisco, where she curates literary/music events in the series "Communities Without Borders." She is an active member of the Revolutionary Poets Brigade, working closely with the pre-eminent "Poet for the People" Jack Hirschman, to whom she says she is "indebted beyond measure." She has published cultural critiques and poetry in anthologies and journals and performed in various poetry/music ensembles nationally and internationally.

Same text book, cheaper price

My son needed this book for an AP (advanced placement) high school class. I can't speak to the quality of the material, but I can say it was a lot cheaper to order from Amazon than it was to buy from the school. By like $75 cheaper!

Great, but sometimes confusing...

I had to use this textbook for my last 2 years of Music Theory class (Theory III and Theory IV). It's definitely a good text as it covers everything I needed to know and had great examples. But it could often be confusing! It seems as if it was written from the perspective of "I'm an expert on Music Theory, look what I know!" instead of a "I'm brand new to all this, please explain it as simply and concisely as possible." perspective. It will definitely teach you what you need to know, but it doesn't have the most clear, easy-to-understand explanations. Thankfully my teacher was great at simplifying the subject enough for our class to grasp the concepts.

So overall, if you have to use this book, you won't be disappointed in what it offers, but if you need the theory presented explained in the simplest, most easy-to-understand way possible, then there are definitely other books and websites that'll help you a lot more.

Useless if you use screen readers.

This book is roughly 40 times the cost any ebook should be, and it's covered with DRM. I'm legally blind, and this DRM means I can't use my normal screen readers on it and can't convert it to a PDF or other format that's easier for me to use. The publisher is more concerned with protecting its rights than providing a quality experience.
