In August 1978 the wife of a first secretary at the Soviet embassy defected to the United States with her two young children, seeking opportunity for them all to control their own lives. For seven years she lived under the assumed name of Alexandra Costa until the publicized return of defector Vitaly Yurchenko prompted her to talk about the way defectors are treated by the CIA. She writes candidly about the reasons for her defection, her previous life in the Soviet Union and at the embassy, and her struggles as a single parent attending an American business school and then starting her own business. Only a strong and determined person could have survived the uncertainties and pitfalls she faced. Her story should be taught in American schools. Perhaps then our young people would have a better appreciation for their liberty and not take freedom for granted. What a courageous woman!.

Enlightening

I read this book ages ago and wondered how people in the U. S. S. R. could stand living in the kind of deprivation that they suffered. Mrs. Costa shows us how: they lived in ignorance of how we in America were living, even 40 years ago. They did realize that color played a more important role in our lives in the 60's since they would cherish those old plastic Comet containers as pretty objets d'art to decorate their homes - if they could get one on the black market. I found a copy I had recently and noticed how many of the things Mrs. Costa describes about Russian life then are happening in America today, so I sent one to my uncle so we could watch together as our country changes to a mirror image of deprivation under sincere lies and heavier tax burdens and less freedom. For example: When Mrs. Costa got her new Buick over here from the Russian Embassy, she mistakenly got on the wrong freeway and headed out of D. C. The freeway had no exits for about 35 miles, so she was desperate to get off of it and slowed almost to a stop. A trooper came to her rescue, and she sobbed out her story, begging him not to take her to prison for being so far away from her residence. He asked her if she was a Russian citizen. Yes. Well, this is America, and if you have the money and time, you can drive all the way to California, and no one is going to take you to prison. I keep wondering just how long that will be true. Every one who loves driving, saving money, shopping, variety in life, the right to run your own life should read this book just to see if socialism/communism is really what we want here. We've NEVER been under the tyranny of a monarchy, oligarchy, etc. Could we the people endure that?

The vast majority of Soviet defectors were men. If women were involved, they were most likely the wives of the defectors. And not only were the defectors mainly men. They were also nearly always KGB or GRU (military intelligence) spies. Elena Alexandra Costa (aka. Yelena Mitrokhina) was therefore a rare kind of defector indeed. She was not a spy and nor was she a soldier. She worked in the area of publishing and copyrights, one of the Soviets' few truly legitimate commercial activities in the West. Long accustomed to the primitive living conditions endured by most Russians during the communist era -- food shortages, interminable lineups, cramped living space -- she was unprepared for the material wealth and open friendliness that she found in Washington. It was not long before she could see the greater opportunities that life in America would offer her two pre-school children. She eloquently describes her turmoil as she weighs the risks and advantages to defecting. Perhaps the most wrenching part of her story comes after she defects. She is nearly overwhelmed by culture shock and sense of isolation. She begins to understand why fully half of those who defected ended up returning to the Soviet Union within a short period of time. She also sees that she is not completely trusted by the American authorities, that like so many other would-be defectors , she might turn out to be a double agent. The book beautifully describes her astounding journey from Soviet student and philologist, to Soviet copyright representative, to defector and finally to successful Wharton MBA graduate and computer consultant, all accomplished while raising two small children singlehandedly. Alexandra Costa has given us a rare and invaluable account of a courageous woman's harrowing transition literally from one world into another.

About the Author
Agnes Martin was born in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1912, and she moved to the United States in 1931. Her first solo exhibition was held in 1958 at the Betty Parsons Gallery, New York. In 1967 she moved to New Mexico and abandoned painting for seven years. The early 1990s saw her work exhibited in solo shows at the Stedelijk Museum, and at the Whitney, New York, and later in the Menil Collection, Houston, in 2002. Martin died in 2004.

Reading this book was like stepping back into one of my college english classes... not only did I find it extremely enjoyable reading, but I found myself alternating between nodding my head and slapping myself on the head (figuratively--"duh, of course, why didn't I see that before?!"). I strongly recommend this book for any Harry Potter fan plus any parent who is concerned about letting their children read the books. I'm in my 40s and have read the (HP) books myself 4 times each and enjoyed them thoroughly each and every reading!

straight forward analysis of Harry Potter

I have read many of John Granger's books and am completely enamored with The Deathly Hallows Lectures. I did not think that I would that this book supplant it as my favorite of Granger's writing, but it might be. Where the Lectures are a strong academic analysis after the completion of series, this book is written in a more straight forward manner and is the book that I will recommend to my friends and family who are more casual fans of the series. It should be noted that this is the third edition of the book previously titled Looking for God in Harry Potter, so if you think Christians are trying to force their world view into the Harry Potter series, then this isn't the book for you. Although you don't have to be a Christian to enjoy this book. J.K. Rowling has called the Christian symbolism in the books, "obvious," and she's writing in a tradition of British literature that is very Christian. Rowling is writing about her faith and you don't have to be religious to see how the final book in the series is a story to symbolize her personal faith and the struggle that ensues to even have faith. John Granger successfully synthesizes this and much more into this book to show how "a children's story" has become the most popular epic book in the last hundred years. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to see the mechanics of why the Harry Potter series entralls millions of people worldwide.

A Christian Scholar's Interpretation of the Harry Potter series

This book presents two sections in which John Granger gives his interpretation of the elements that make J.K Rowling's Harry Potter books such compelling reading.The first ten chapters are connected to elements that are contained in Rowling's books that make them both enjoyable yet seriously themed. My personal favorites from the first section were Chapter 4, which deals with Alchemy and connects the process to spiritual growth, Chapter 9, which examines the symbols used in Harry Potter, and Chapter 10, "Fun with Names," which examines the meaning behind many of the character's names in the series.(Granger's take on the dual meanings of Neville Longbottom are almost worth the price of the book alone!) Chapters 11 through 19 deal with the individual Harry Potter books, and here Granger examines the books with a Christian viewpoint that addresses the major themes found in the series of books. Any reader of the Harry Potter books will find enlightenment in this book, but it is especially apt for Christian readers of the series who have had to deal with bias from other Christians who have negative views of the books.

Custom SharePoint Solutions - the book teaches you how to do it, if you have some JS knowledge in advance

I am a blogger, writing reviews about IT books, IT articles and anything I find interesting. I have received the book "Custom SharePoint Solutions with HTML and JS" from the publisher Apress.Com for a review, upon a request of my site.


The book is rather easy to read, starting with using of SharePoint browser based tools. The first chapter is about setting environments, tools and etc. From special "payed" software you need SharePoint and Visual Studio Express (The Express version is free, if that matters). The later chapters cover building own SharePoint parts with jQuery, AJAX, HTML, CSS, JS. The DOM model of JS explained in one chapter pretty well and the REST API is in the last one. The explanations are made with lots of screenshots and text. What I liked was the fact that almost all of the source code of the book was made available for anyone in the Apress.Com site and the step by step approach with explanations.
Prerequisite knowledge - you should understand HTML and JS to make the most of the book, it really describes the JS and HTML code, but not for an absolute beginner in the subject.

A small minus (which can possibly be not a minus at all) - Sometimes the screenshots go too much into detail, e.g. a picture for creating a new file in Visual Studio or copying a link location, but in general they are ok and quite informative.

Pretty much that is my review. The book is informative and well written, if you follow it you would be able to customize a SharePoint site. Thus, I would give it five stars.

This book helped me a lot in learning how to work with HTML & JS in SharePoint. I'd definitely recommend it, and I've not really seen any books out there that cover the same topic with specificity and relevance.

Introductory material, somewhat disappointing

This book is a very beginner friendly introduction to SharePoint customization using JavaScript, but not much more. I was hoping for something slightly more advanced. This is the book I wish I had read before simply traversing all the (free) material on TechNet concerning JSOM.

I wouldn't rightly call any of the actual examples you'll see in this book as real "custom solutions" for SharePoint, but rather a beginner's introduction to create simple pages for performing basic operations using JavaScript in SharePoint 2013.

I'm sorry to say I did not learn much new from this book after having already gone through all the free material from Microsoft, which is honestly quite good and has a lot of code examples.

_Beasts, Men and Gods_, reprinted by Kessinger Publishing, is Ferdinand Ossendowski's fascinating account of his adventures and travels in northern Asia; Siberia, Mongolia, Tibet, and China, in an effort to flee the Red army of the Russian revolution. Dr. Ossendowski was a scientist and writer who lived for a time in Siberia when the Russian revolution broke out. It came about that he became suspected of being a counter-revolutionary and thus had to flee his home one day into the forests. There he began his adventures as related in this book, where he met up first with a murderer and later with various peasants along the way. Eventually, Ossendowski joined the White forces in Mongolia who opposed the revolution and the Bolsheviki. Much of the book is spent relating the various political events that occur in the "heart of Asia" involving Russia, China, Mongolia, and Tibet, and the relations between these nations. The book becomes interesting however when Ossendowski begins to relate the tales of the Buddhist religion of Mongolia. He encounters many of the Lamas, holy pontiffs, and doctors of this religion and relates tales of the Dalai Lama in Lhasa in Tibet, as well as tales of various fortune tellers, poisoners, and soothsayers. Ossendowski also encounters "the Living Buddha", the King of Mongolia, who has become blind through excessive drinking. The Living Buddha is chosen from among the peasants as the incarnation of the Living Buddha in a child (his soul having passed into another body after the death of the previous Living Buddha) and this child is taken to be reared by the Lamas. The Living Buddha relates a special prophecy for all of Asia, which Ossendowski records. In addition, Ossendowski becomes fascinated with tales of a mysterious subterranean kingdom called Agarthi (similar to the kingdom of Aggartha noted by another writer Saint-Yves d'Alveydre in his _Mission de l'Inde_) which can be reached by passageways from throughout the world. In Aggarthi the King of the World or Brahytma lives along with his two assistants, Mahytma (who knows the purposes of future events), and Mahynga (who rules the causes of these events). From what Ossendowski is able to piece together of this legend, many have travelled to the kingdom of Agarthi, returning with much scientific knowledge. In addition, in 1890 the King of the World appeared in a temple to make a special prophecy regarding Asia and the world in the coming century. There he noted that many events and cataclysms would occur, followed by the emergence of those who dwell in the subterranean kingdom into the upper world. Ossendowski's adventure ends at this point, with him travelling to Peking in China and eventually making his way back out of Asia to Europe again. Ossendowski wonders what will happen when Asia rises up to meet Europe in the coming century. This book which has proven itself to be prophetic has remained popular with esotericists ever since. It remains a fascinating travel adventure which occurs at an historic moment, the coming of the Russian revolution and the rise of the communist state at the beginning of the twentieth century.

A must read travel narrative

Ossendowski offers a healthy combination of facts and fantasy in his absorbing account of adventures and misadventures in Russia and Mongolia. So much has been said and written about Beasts, Men and Gods - what is to be added?

First, his worldview: read for a thorough anti-Bolshevik perspective on the Russian revolution;

Second, his fascination with Buddhism and the ideas of pan-Asianism, which he shares with Ungern.

Thirdly, a keen eye for Asia's promising prospects; in his philosophical discourse Ossendowski warns about the imminent rise of "Asia" as a mighty opponent to Old Europe.

Ossendowski's discussion of the life and times of the Mongols is very perceptive; his description of the customs of the people, lamaist religious practices, etc - is very detailed and interesting.

Of course, his glorious adventures in Tibet and Mongolia should be taken with a grain of salt, while the whole last part about the underground "King of the World" might interest mystics, though even this part offers a glimpse into the Mongolian society with its remarkable fusion of beliefs and superstitions.

He writes about his actual adventures trying to stay alive during the Russian Revolution. The things he experienced are incredible, and offer a fantastic first-hand view of Russia and Siberia during those tragic times.
