Antoni Ferdynand Ossendowski (May 27, 1876 - January 3, 1945) was a Polish writer, journalist, traveler, globetrotter, explorer and university professor. He is best known for his books about Lenin and the Russian Civil War, a war in which he took part.

F. Ossendowski's Journey Through Mysterious Asia.

_Beasts, Men and Gods_, reprinted by Kessinger Publishing, is Ferdinand Ossendowski's fascinating account of his adventures and travels in northern Asia; Siberia, Mongolia, Tibet, and China, in an effort to flee the Red army of the Russian revolution. Dr. Ossendowski was a scientist and writer who lived for a time in Siberia when the Russian revolution broke out. It came about that he became suspected of being a counter-revolutionary and thus had to flee his home one day into the forests. There he began his adventures as related in this book, where he met up first with a murderer and later with various peasants along the way. Eventually, Ossendowski joined the White forces in Mongolia who opposed the revolution and the Bolsheviki. Much of the book is spent relating the various political events that occur in the "heart of Asia" involving Russia, China, Mongolia, and Tibet, and the relations between these nations. The book becomes interesting however when Ossendowski begins to relate the tales of the Buddhist religion of Mongolia. He encounters many of the Lamas, holy pontiffs, and doctors of this religion and relates tales of the Dalai Lama in Lhasa in Tibet, as well as tales of various fortune tellers, poisoners, and soothsayers. Ossendowski also encounters "the Living Buddha", the King of Mongolia, who has become blind through excessive drinking. The Living Buddha is chosen from among the peasants as the incarnation of the Living Buddha in a child (his soul having passed into another body after the death of the previous Living Buddha) and this child is taken to be reared by the Lamas. The Living Buddha relates a special prophecy for all of Asia, which Ossendowski records. In addition, Ossendowski becomes fascinated with tales of a mysterious subterranean kingdom called Agarthi (similar to the kingdom of Aggartha noted by another writer Saint-Yves d'Alveydre in his _Mission de l'Inde_) which can be reached by passageways from throughout the world. In Aggarthi the King of the World or Brahytma lives along with his two assistants, Mahytma (who knows the purposes of future events), and Mahynga (who rules the causes of these events). From what Ossendowski is able to piece together of this legend, many have travelled to the kingdom of Agarthi, returning with much scientific knowledge. In addition, in 1890 the King of the World appeared in a temple to make a special prophecy regarding Asia and the world in the coming century. There he noted that many events and cataclysms would occur, followed by the emergence of those who dwell in the subterranean kingdom into the upper world. Ossendowski's adventure ends at this point, with him travelling to Peking in China and eventually making his way back out of Asia to Europe again. Ossendowski wonders what will happen when Asia rises up to meet Europe in the coming century. This book which has proven itself to be prophetic has remained popular with esotericists ever since. It remains a fascinating travel adventure which occurs at an historic moment, the coming of the Russian revolution and the rise of the communist state at the beginning of the twentieth century.

A must read travel narrative

Ossendowski offers a healthy combination of facts and fantasy in his absorbing account of adventures and misadventures in Russia and Mongolia. So much has been said and written about Beasts, Men and Gods - what is to be added?

First, his worldview: read for a thorough anti-Bolshevik perspective on the Russian revolution;

Second, his fascination with Buddhism and the ideas of pan-Asianism, which he shares with Ungern.

Thirdly, a keen eye for Asia's promising prospects; in his philosophical discourse Ossendowski warns about the imminent rise of "Asia" as a mighty opponent to Old Europe.

Ossendowski's discussion of the life and times of the Mongols is very perceptive; his description of the customs of the people, lamaist religious practices, etc - is very detailed and interesting.

Of course, his glorious adventures in Tibet and Mongolia should be taken with a grain of salt, while the whole last part about the underground "King of the World" might interest mystics, though even this part offers a glimpse into the Mongolian society with its remarkable fusion of beliefs and superstitions.

At one hundred and sixty unnumbered pages, this small paperback book is targeted toward artists, writers, and readers looking for ways to get a project started. With no profanity, lewd scenes, or extreme violence, any age group can glean ways to "get started" in creativity. The book is more of a tutorial collection of interactive fill-in-the-blank pages with simplistic fonts, designs, and drawings.

After the first page immediately starting a task (to fill in the page with at least three positive words), Crutchley has the reader sign his or her name at the bottom as co-author of the future book to be completed.

With a short one page foreword, big bold words state:
Things to remember:
Start every task.
If you don't like one, start another.
Don't be afraid.
There is no wrong.
You cannot fail.
Smile.

Starting on a sophomoric footing, the author gives simple tasks to do without any thinking, stimulating the thought process to write down anything that comes to mind such as scribbling words out, crossing off the words "task" with different colored pens, drawing anything that comes to mind in small boxes, or writing with your weak hand, mouth, or foot.

After a ten minute pause, the next section gets a little more complicated, drawing what was observed when you went outside for the break. The book pushes, prompts, and promotes creativity by forcing the reader to willingly participate in the nonsense, silliness, and fun problem-solving tasks.

Besides having a procrastination log, lists of things that need cleaning or organizing, panic pages to vent emotions, and designing achievement awards, the book mentions how to overcome the fear of starting by figuring out what enables and holds one back. The final section is on finding your end goal by breaking tasks down in smaller chunks.

With quotes from famous people, the book empowers the reader to start now, not later, to find his or her mojo and move on successfully on a project. This is a unique gift book for business team meetings to inspire, artists who are afraid to expand their creations, and writers staring at the blank page day after day.

Unique jump-start to creativity

Do you have trouble starting a new creative project? Is the blank canvas or screen too intimidating to face, so you try to avoid it? Do you wish and hope you could be an artist, but never follow through on your dreams? If so, The Art of Getting Started might be able to help you in your creative pursuits.

This unique book on jump-starting creativity doesn’t spoon-feed good ideas and suggestions for moving past blocks. Instead, it’s chock-full of exercises designed to get you out of your head and onto the page. While encouraging us to make messes and allow our work to be less than perfect, it forces us to take action and not sit around waiting for inspiration to strike.

It’s risky to start a new project when we don’t know the outcome. But if we never start, we can never know the joy of completion and the chance of success. If you work through the exercises in this book, you may find some of your creative blocks vanishing, leaving you free to create.

Artistic Ability NOT Required

I'm a fiction writer, and I love to jump-start my creative day with an exercise or two. I LOVE this little book that's packed with fun and fast creative tasks. Making messes that don't matter is a great way to turn off that pesky internal editor & this book does a fantastic job!

Highly recommended for both writers and artists. And wouldn't it be great if teachers used books like this in the classroom? Hint. Hint.

Unmotivating presentation and layout, reasonable content if organized better.

A lot of the information in the book is useful, but is so poorly organized that any student would be daunted by the lengthy process. The 'objectives' and the 'activity' suggested are generally appropriate, but the purpose of the book is lost in the detail. There is no brief introduction or short list of the headings to be covered to the lengthy dissertations that fill each chapter. Instead the student is required to wade through the lengthy explanations and then try to decipher what the author is actually trying to say. The main complaint is that it is not a workable textbook albeit that there is good information.

Not worth the money

I bought this book thinking I would be better at essay writing. I used the book once, to see what was in it, and it had no use for me. I started writing better essays by just practicing and getting feedback from my teachers. Definitely not worth the money.

About the Author
John J. Coyle is director of corporate relations for the Center for Supply Chain Research and professor emeritus of supply chain and information systems at Penn State University. The author of more than 100 publications in the areas of transportation and logistics, Professor Coyle has presented papers on these topics at such professional meetings as the Council of Logistics Management, the American Marketing Association, the National Academy of Sciences, the Transportation Research Forum, and the Southern Marketing Association. In addition to TRANSPORTATION, he also coauthors best-selling THE MANAGEMENT OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS. From 1990 to 1996, Dr. Coyle was editor of the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, and he has served on the editorial review board of the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, THE SUPPLY CHAIN REVIEW, and THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS. In 1991, he received the Council of Logistics Management's Distinguished Service Award, which honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to the art and science of logistics. In 2003, The Philadelphia Traffic Club named Dr. Coyle Person of the Year, and in 2004 he received the Eccles Medal from the International Society of Logistics and the Lion's Paw Medal from Penn State. Dr. Coyle serves on the boards of three logistics companies. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Penn State and his doctorate from Indiana University, Bloomington, where he was a U.S. Steel Fellow.

John Langley, Professor of Supply Chain Management and Director of Supply Chain Executive Programs at the Georgia Institute of Technology, is actively involved in supply chain management and business logistics. His professional involvement includes supply chain strategy, supply chain relationships, and outsourcing of logistics services. Dr. Langley received a BS degree in mathematics, an MBA degree in finance, and a PhD degree in logistics management, all from Penn State University. Dr. Langley has coauthored numerous books and is a consultant and advisor to business firms and serves on the board of directors of UTi Worldwide Inc., Forward Air Corporation, and Averitt Express, Inc.

Brian Gibson, professor of Supply Chain Management Auburn University, is engaged in executive education and consulting, as well as leadership roles for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and the Retail Industry Leaders Association. Dr. Gibson earned a BSBA from Central Michigan University, an MBA from Wayne State University, and a PhD in logistics and transportation from the University of Tennessee. He has received multiple awards for excellence in teaching, research, and outreach.

Robert Novack is an associate professor of supply chain management in the Department of Supply Chain and Information Systems at Penn State University. From 1981 to 1984 he worked in operations management and planning for the Yellow Freight Corporation in Overland Park, Kansas, and from 1984 to 1986 he worked in planning and transportation at Drackett Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Novack's numerous articles have been published in such publications as the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, TRANSPORTATION JOURNAL, and THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT. He also is a coauthor of CREATING LOGISTICS VALUE: THEMES FOR THE FUTURE. Active in the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, Dr. Novack has served as overall program chair for the annual conference, as a track chair, as a session speaker, and as a member of numerous committees. Dr. Novack holds the CTL designation from AST&L and is a member of WERC. He earned a BS degree and an MBA in logistics from Penn State University and a Ph.D. in logistics from the University of Tennessee.

Edward J. Bardi is principal of Bardi Consulting and professor emeritus of business logistics at the University of Toledo. He also has served as acting dean and associate dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Toledo and has held faculty positions at Iowa State University. Dr. Bardi has published numerous articles dealing with business logistics, transportation management, carrier selection, economic development, and employee household goods movement in various journals, including TRANSPORTATION JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, HANDLING AND SHIPPING, BAYLOR BUSINESS REVIEW, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT, LOGISTICS & TRANSPORTATION REVIEW, and PERSONNEL JOURNAL. He also is co-author of SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT: A LOGISTICS PERSPECTIVE, 8E. A popular seminar leader of domestic and global business logistics management development programs, Dr. Bardi has served as a consultant to numerous business and public agencies in the areas of business logistics, marketing, and economic development. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from Penn State University, majoring in business logistics/transportation economics.

I hate this textbook

This textbook is VERY dry and difficult to read. My professor says he likes it, but he doesn't even teach anything out of it. It was very expensive and I feel like it is overly wordy/repetetive. As a text for a capstone course, I don't recommend it. Maybe a beginning course for supply chain mgt.

I was very disappointed to find that it is not spiral-bound like earlier ...

I received my copy of this book in the 80's… Mom mom had hers from the 60's, and Grandma had one, too. My spriral-bound treasure was starting to fall apart from years of use, so I was excited to see this reprint. Upon its arrival, I was very disappointed to find that it is not spiral-bound like earlier editions. I would have taken it to be rebound if only the centre margin was left wide enough for a binding. *sigh* I dragged out my tried-and-true copy, the one with the pages falling out, and started using it again.

I am disappointed because the recipes are not all identical to the ones in my older edition. The pages are also smaller and there are no colour photographs that add personality to the book. It is also missing the wire ring binding that my older edition had. It cannot lay flat on the table and this makes it difficult to read and follow recipes while cooking.

I HAD ONE OF THESE COOK BOOKS THAT MY NANNY GAVE ME WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER AND IT HAS BEEN SO WORN OUT AND PAGES FALLING OFF AND I HAVE HAD A WAR WITH MY DAUGHTERS TRYING TO KEEP IT IN MY HOUSE. LOL WELL I GOT IT BACK AND FOUND NEW ONE'S SO I CAN GIVE THEM BOTH ONE OF THERE VERY OWN. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET THIS COOK BOOK FOR YEARS AND HERE IT IS SO GREAT TO FIND IT. THIS IS SO WELL WORTH IT AND THE SMALL TIME I HAD TO WAIT FOR IT. I LOVE THIS BOOK AND YOU WOULD TO IF YOU LOVE TO COOK OR BAKE THINGS ... SO MANY GREAT RECEIPIES SUCH AS THE BANANA NUT LOAF YOU WILL LOVE IT.
