Resolving and transforming.

In just a few months, it seems, the third edition of this text will be out. This speaks to the staying power of the text by Ramsbotham, Woodhouse and Miall. Conflict resolution in the context of this text is really international relations and politics on a large scale. When I told a friend of mine that I was doing a course on conflict resolution, her first thought was to ask questions that showed she thought the subject was one of interpersonal relations on a small scale - conflicts within families, between neighbours, co-workers and employer/employee relations, etc. My course, being a part of the National Security Studies program at AMU, did not address that (worthy though friend's idea might be in another setting). In the preface, the authors state, `We produced the first edition of this book in order to provide a comprehensive account of the way in which conflict resolution emerged as a field of academic enquiry and how it might be utilized to manage post-Cold War conflict peacefully.' While there are certainly parallels between interpersonal relationships and international relationships, this text is focused clearly on the later.

The authors set the stage by looking at some basic concepts of conflict resolution models, different levels of conflict, and different ways of thinking about the roles of the participants. Classic approaches to thinking about things such as the Prisoner's Dilemma as well as new models that involve multiple parties at varying levels of concern and participation provide many examples both theoretical and historical. Tracing the development of conflict resolution from the post-World War I environment forward, the authors see three main periods: the inter-war period with stumbling efforts, the second generation post-World War II with more sustained development in conflict resolution research, the third generation during the Vietnam and post-Vietnam war era, and a reconstructive fourth generation from the mid-1980s to today. In this period, `Conflict resolution does not prescribe specific solutions or end goals for society, beyond a commitment to the core assumption that aggressive win-lose styles of engagement in violent conflict usually incur costs that are not only unacceptably high for the conflict parties, but also for world society in general.'

Conflict can take many forms - terrorism, more formal warfare, economic sanctions both effective and ineffective, interstate and intrastate conflict, and more. The authors devote a significant amount of the text to looking at ways to interpret conflict before moving on to chapters on peacebuilding, the ethics of intervention, and reconciliation. The authors conclude on a hopeful note, discounting various theories of doom and despair. `Conflict resolution and conflict transformation insist that, although human conflict is inevitable, the path to violence is not. It offers robust criteria for guiding policy choices in the positive handling of potentially damaging conflict, set within equally clear-cut principles for addressing underlying structural or cultural asymmetries.' This is no pie-in-the-sky text that promises peace and equity everywhere in every way. However, it does look for people at all levels to take both a local and global view of their actions, something that our increasingly shrinking world needs. A key word here is transformation - not a simple cessation of conflict, but rather changing it into something that can be less destructive, and possibly even constructive in different ways.

Useful for those who want a sense of conflict around the world, this book is good for anyone studying political science, international relations, security-related studies, sociology, and more.

Very average read

I am an avid reader of all types of novels but I love romance. I have read quite a few romance novels and this was basically very very average. Meet Caitlin Bennett poor little rich girl who has no one in her life. She is a mystery writer and keeps herself locked up in her penthouse apartment. She starts to receive hate mail and is pushed in front of a car. At this point she knows that someone is stalking her. Her friend asks his brother to come protect her, and enter Mac, the bodyguard. These two have never liked each other and now are forced to spend time together until the stalker and of course later we find out he is a killer is caught.

I don't expect much of a plot when I read a romance. In fact, I'm used to the plots being "corny" and "underdeveloped." But not only was this story line silly as a "mystery" but the romance was awful. The Caitlin character spent most of the time whining, but you were supposed to like her because she treated her chaffeaur like one of the family. She's extremely wealthy and thinks someone is stalking her, but never bothers to hire private security. Her publisher gets a bomb threat and doesn't hire private security. When she is finally assaulted, one person comes to her rescue. This story had the usual flaws I find in many poorly written stories (e.g. the killer enters her apartment very easily through the roof). This was so hard to swallow - how many of the rich and famous have their homes poorly equipped so just about any nutcase off the street could enter. How many rich people would stay terriorized and not hire anyone to protect them? (The answer is zero, only a poor person would stay terrorized for months). Also the heroine's actions are just plain dumb (e.g. going on tv) And finally the killer was so predictable you knew who he would be in the first few chapters. Because in every poorly written story I've read, that's who the killer usually is. Very average read.

Possible Ghost Writer?

I have read many books by Sharon Sala/Dinah McCall and this one was a major disappointment. The writing was terrible. The clues as to the killer were so obvious, you knew who he was in the first couple of chapters. In addition, the phrase :Oh, My God" and it's variations were used to express every emotion from suprise to disgust to dispair - over and over again. I had to force myself to finish reading it just to see if maybe I had been wrong about how the murderer was. Unfortunately, I wasn't. Sala has written so many good books but if I had read this one first, I would never have bought another one. I'm hoping she didn't really write it - that she used a ghost writer for this one.

Great suspense, but romance falls short...

This was a very good story, but the romance got in the way. I am a diehard romance reader and thought that a romance/suspense would whet my appetite, but this story didn't do the job that well. The suspense was awesome and does keep you guessing till the end but the somewhat 'corny' romance got in the way of an excellent plot of a woman being terrorized by a crazed stalker...

He prowls the streets, anxiously waiting or his moment to catch her alone. To show her how much he hates her. How much she has ruined hs life. Caitlin Bennett, bestselling mystery author writes her next novel in ernest amid the chaos below while safely tucked away in her highrise luxury apartment. She is afraid for she has been recieving deranged letters from a crazed fan for almost 6 months, but the latest one bears a grim warning, she needs to tell the police before he finds her.
A horrible event forces her to hire an ex-cop, 'Mac' McKee, her best friend's brother and her personal antagonist for the past years as her personal bodyguard.
With his protection she begins to feel safe once again, but when two more victims are found brutally murdered, each bearing a unique resemblance to Caitlin, they realize that SHE is the ultimate target and the crazed killer is now coming to claim his final victim!
Can Mac save Caitlin from the man who despises her? Will he lose his heart to her in the process? A true thriller that will keep you guessing and the end is a shock...
I liked Caitlin, she was strong and witty, but Mac needs some work. He didn't hold my interest and his character wasn't developed well enough for me to believe his affection for her. The romance between the two was bland and kind of 'corny'. Too much 'mush' when there should've been resistence between them. I say this because throughout the beginning, we are led to believe that these two irritate one another and are attracted to each other at the same time. But what we get is 'mush' right off the bat with little to no dispute.

Dr. Hughes is great

I have the pleasure of working with the author himself, and I can tell you he knows what he's talking about. I call him the God of EEG. This book is well written, easy to understand and the information provided doesn't make you want to scratch your head and say "huh"? I have his autographed hard copy at home, and I have a copy I made here at work with me. I find myself reaching for it often, when I encounter something I haven't seen in a while. With the new anti seizure medications and the lack of clinical episodes, we don't get to see as many "fun" things at work anymore. Dr. Hughes' book is a great tool to have, as it quickly gives you the information you're looking for when your mind needs to be refreshed. Buy it ASAP, as you can't always find it, and they are no longer printing it. You won't regret it. I promise.

As a child neurology fellow, I can't begin to describe how this book has helped my understanding of EEG. It is easy to read, understandable and concise. By far the best book I've read on the topic.
