The Summer I Saved the World . . . in 65 Days, by Michele Weber Hurwitz

It's summertime, and thirteen-year-old Nina Ross is feeling kind of lost. Her beloved grandma died last year; her parents work all the time; her brother's busy; and her best friend is into clothes, makeup, and boys. While Nina doesn't know what "her thing" is yet, it's definitely not shopping and makeup. And it's not boys, either. Though . . . has Eli, the boy next door, always been so cute?
This summer, Nina decides to change things. She hatches a plan. There are sixty-five days of summer. Every day, she'll anonymously do one small but remarkable good thing for someone in her neighborhood, and find out: does doing good actually make a difference? Along the way, she discovers that her neighborhood, and her family, are full of surprises and secrets.
In this bighearted, sweetly romantic novel, things may not turn out exactly as Nina expects. They might be better.

From Booklist
It begins with Mrs. Chung’s marigolds. Mourning the loss of her beloved grandmother and grappling with the changes her family has undergone in the last year, 13-year-old Nina Ross is feeling adrift. Her attorney parents are largely absent, her older brother is leaving for college, and her best friend has gone boy crazy. After Nina impulsively plants the marigolds her neighbor, who has a broken leg, can’t manage, Nina decides to find out if committing small, anonymous acts of kindness will make a difference in the lives of the people around her, setting off on a crusade to do one good thing for each of the 65 days of summer between eighth grade and the beginning of high school. Hurwitz (Calli Be Gold, 2011) has given readers a sensitive narrator struggling with real, if not terribly dramatic, issues. Insightful writing, realistic dialogue infused with humor, and a sweet romantic element add depth to the story. Tween readers will identify with Nina and may be inspired to emulate her list of good things with their own. Grades 5-8. --Magan Szwarek

Make the world a better place, one day at a time!
By Little Willow
This summer, 13-year-old Nina is going to make the world a better place, one day (and one good deed) at a time.

After looking around the cul-de-sac, Nina decides to help out her friends and neighbors in small but remarkable ways. She decides to do 65 anonymous good deeds, one for every day of summer vacation. While some of these activities and gifts are planned in advance, others are spur-of-the-moment, but all of them are based on what the people around her truly need. Nina listens to people, and she listens to her heart. She can tell when someone needs a pick-me-up or a helping hand. Sometimes, she simply leaves an item on someone's doorstep or in their mailbox to make them smile; other times, she simply offers them her shoulder to lean on.

Nina's own house could use some smiles, too. Nina's grandmother, who taught her to value simple truths, passed away exactly one year ago. Now, with her lawyer parents immersed in their current case and her college-bound brother barely ever home, Nina yearns to have a real conversation with her family. Meanwhile, her best friend Jorie is flirting with boys and planning their dates for the homecoming dance, but Nina's not really into that yet. Even though she is kind of seeing her long-time friend Eli in a new light...

As the summer continues, some neighbors seem to appreciate the good deeds while others are grow suspicious, thinking they are pranks. Mostly, though, Nina's actions have the intended result: they brighten someone's day and serve as a reminder than somebody cares. As her "little efforts" rub off on others, Nina realizes that "doing good is contagious," and she continues to practice random acts of kindness simply because she likes helping others.

The transition from middle school to high school can be all sorts of things - overwhelming, intimidating, exciting, nerve-wracking, eye-opening - all at once. This book moves through the summer between eighth and ninth grade with a naturally flowing narrative fueled by a thoughtful, selfless protagonist. Nina is truly a good person, without a hidden agenda, which is so refreshing. This novel is filled with moments that are poignant and uplifting without ever being preachy or cloying. Nina's resolve and voice grows stronger, and she is never once tempted to brag about her good deeds.

Many books and films showcase the end of a friendship, often with the old friend burning or blowing off the protagonist. But not all friendships end in a big blow-up. Not all friendships end. They change, just like (as) people change. The bond between Jorie and Nina stretches like taffy throughout the book, stretching and straining as their priorities change. Hurwitz does a wonderful job of examining the strangeness and sadness that comes when friendships are tested, when you feel like you are growing apart from someone you've known for so long:

In first grade, when Jorie moved into the cul-de-sac, we had playdates and did the things first-grade girls do. That was enough back then. But now? Jorie and I are in between two places. Like an intermission between the first and second acts of a play. I'm not sure how things are going to end up. - Pages 9-10

I miss the girl who couldn't glue, brought me the towel after we jumped into the water, made sure I was okay. The girl I knew. - Page 114

This is just one example of the connections Nina makes. Hurwitz masterfully creates distinctive, realistic characters and allows her leading lady to have clear relationships and storylines with different people. This includes her older brother, Matt; her workaholic parents; Eli, her friend who is literally the boy next door; Eli's adorable little brother, Thomas, who fancies himself a superhero; Sariah, a new friend in her summer art class; and others on her street, ranging from high-strung Mrs. Millman, who bosses around her dog and her husband, to the extremely pregnant Mrs. Cantaloni and her energetic three young sons, from the soft-spoken Mrs. Chung to the elusive Mr. Dembrowski. Oh, and a fox.

In short: The Summer I Saved the World...in 65 Days by Michele Weber Hurwitz is delightful. Pick it up, and pay it forward.

Favorite supporting character: Thomas.

Favorite (and unexpected) scene: Running. (Another favorite moment: The swings.)

This is Michele's second novel for tweens. If you liked Nina's story, make sure to pick up the author's first book, Calli Be Gold! Also check out See You At Harry's by Jo Knowles (alert: you'll need Kleenex for that one) and The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. On the surface, these books might not seem that similar, but consider them like a variety pack, your summer trail mix, with different but complimentary flavors.

Refreshing change from over-the-top drama
By Maggie Knapp
Four and a half stars - rounded up to five. With it's pink-ish cover and cheerfully smiling girl, it's hard not to describe this book as "sweet." Which isn't a bad thing - it's nice to have a mix of styles from sweet to edgy on our library shelves. Nina, age 13, is at loose ends. Taking a cue from her fairly recently departed grandmother, she decides to do one nice thing each day for the neighbors in her cul-de-sac. The trick is not to get found out. Along the way readers meet her boy-crazy friend, her neighbor Eli (who is suddenly a bit of a hottie) and her workaholic parents.

Easy to recommend to 6th graders looking for a novel with a first kiss and some girl drama. Nina has a good head on her shoulders, and makes a likable neighbor and friend.

One Teen Doing What She Can to Make the World a Better Place
By Jennifer Donovan
This was a sweet book by the author of Calli B. Gold, which I also enjoyed. Thirteen-year-old Nina Ross is in the summer before she is starting high school.

It seems that a lot of children's lit focuses on the time right before middle school, but I don't read as much that focuses on this time. It was a good book that could appeal to 13 and 14 year olds, but is also fine for 12 and ups to read (maybe even younger), looking ahead to that time.

There's mild romance and kissing, and Nina's homelife is pretty sad, with workaholic parents who basically neglect her, but she was a sweet heroine who took this pivotal time to figure out who she wants to be. There are a lot of things in her life that she can't control, like her best friend getting a little boy-crazy and more superficial, or her parents lack of attention, or worrying about not fitting in at a new school, but she decides to take the summer and focus on doing 1 good thing each day. She's saving the world one good deed at a time.

The Time Machine is a science fiction novella by H. G. Wells, published in 1895 and later adapted into two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It indirectly inspired many more works of fiction in many media. This 32,000 word story is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term "time machine", coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to such a vehicle. This work is an early example of the Dying Earth sub-genre.

Reshaping National Intelligence for an Age of Information (RAND Studies in Policy Analysis), by Gregory F. Treverton

In a bold and penetrating study, Gregory Treverton, former Vice Chair of the National Intelligence Council and Senate investigator, offers his insider's views on how intelligence gathering and analysis must change. Treverton suggests why intelligence needs to be contrarian and attentive to the longer term. Believing that it is important to tap expertise outside government to solve intelligence problems, he argues that involving colleagues in the academy, think tanks, and Wall Street befits the changed role of government from doer to convener, mediator, and coalition-builder. Review
"This is a 'must-read' book for every senior official in American intelligence agencies and for their policy and congressional overseers. Provocative and replete with evaluations and recommendations that will be highly controversial among intelligence officers, Reshaping National Intelligence offers a comprehensive blueprint for restructuring U.S. intelligence for the post-cold war world, a restructuring the author persuasively argues is essential as tactical military requirements multiply, decision-makers are inundated with publicly available information of varying reliability, and traditional secret intelligence sources no longer shed light on many contemporary issues of importance." Robert M. Gates, Pacific Council on International Policy, Former Deputy Director of CIA --

Core Reference for Intelligence Reform in 2001
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
There are other books on intelligence reform--the best being those by Bruce Berkowitz and Allan Goodman and by Loch Johnson--but this book is very special because it is written by an insider who has come to grips with the imperative for change and who is able to articulate the case for change in a way that others have not. This is arguably the single best and most elegant presentation for why our $30 billion a year intelligence industry must be turned upside down and shift resources away from secret satellite technology and toward analysis, analytic tools, and access to open sources of information.
The author very correctly focuses on the fact that intelligence is about getting useful tailored information to the policy consumer, not about secrets per se. He is perhaps the best spokesperson for the view that the old paradigm--collecting secrets at great expense about a single enemy--must be replaced by the new paradigm--making sense of vast quantities of information that is not secret and covers a diversity of constantly changing targets. He correctly focuses on the selection and intelligent analysis of information rather than the collection of isolated secrets--on making the most of open information.
The book is rich with anecdotal examples and makes a compelling case for dismantling the current intelligence stovepipes while simultaneously dismantling the culture of secrecy that prevents the sharing of useful information, not just within the Nation (e.g. with state and local law enforcement) but with coalition government and non-government allies of the moment.
The author, a past Vice Chairman of the National Intelligence Council and a learned man with deep ties to Harvard, the Council on Foreign Relations, and RAND, concludes on a bitter-sweet note that demands Congressional and Presidential reflection. He firmly believes that both the intelligence community budget and as much intelligence analysis as possible should be made public and be in the public service. This book is highly recommended, and could-together with the the other intelligence reform books published in the past two years--reasonably be used as the starting point for a complete make-over of the U.S. Intelligence Community.

Essential to Understanding Intelligence Challenges
By Ronald A. Woodward
Greg Treverton has written a much needed overview of the national intelligence process and correctly identified the challenges which face the US, in a post-9/11 world. His views of the world beyond 2010 are quite revealing and his challenges to the intelligence community to assess threats to the US are precisely focused. His views on the major intelligence entities reveal urgent modifications of structure and process, if the intelligence community is going to regain relevance with national customers. As a teacher of intelligence process, specifically as it relates to strategic warning, I believe this book is essential reading for anyone who aspires to be a true intelligence professional. This book will help even the wisest analyst understand how to maximize available sources and methods. The quest to provide the best possible intelligence is a goal which must be achieved.

Questions are very close in style/content to my class exam questions
By Reviliver
2nd year med student here (can't imagine who else would want this, lol) and I love this book. Robbins is our class text for pathology, and I hate reading, so I do these questions after watching lecture (and pathoma) and it works awesome. Some of these questions are essentially identical to questions from my exams! Really glad I decided to buy this one.

Inner Engineering: A Yogi's Guide to Joy, by Sadhguru

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Thought leader, visionary, philanthropist, mystic, and yogi Sadhguru presents Western readers with a time-tested path to achieving absolute well-being: the classical science of yoga.

The practice of hatha yoga, as we commonly know it, is but one of eight branches of the body of knowledge that is yoga. In fact, yoga is a sophisticated system of self-empowerment that is capable of harnessing and activating inner energies in such a way that your body and mind function at their optimal capacity. It is a means to create inner situations exactly the way you want them, turning you into the architect of your own joy.

A yogi lives life in this expansive state, and in this transformative book Sadhguru tells the story of his own awakening, from a boy with an unusual affinity for the natural world to a young daredevil who crossed the Indian continent on his motorcycle. He relates the moment of his enlightenment on a mountaintop in southern India, where time stood still and he emerged radically changed. Today, as the founder of Isha, an organization devoted to humanitarian causes, he lights the path for millions. The term guru, he notes, means “dispeller of darkness, someone who opens the door for you. . . . As a guru, I have no doctrine to teach, no philosophy to impart, no belief to propagate. And that is because the only solution for all the ills that plague humanity is self-transformation. Self-transformation means that nothing of the old remains. It is a dimensional shift in the way you perceive and experience life.” The wisdom distilled in this accessible, profound, and engaging book offers readers time-tested tools that are fresh, alive, and radiantly new. Inner Engineering presents a revolutionary way of thinking about our agency and our humanity and the opportunity to achieve nothing less than a life of joy.

Review
Praise for Sadhguru and Inner Engineering

“By any measure, Sadhguru is a remarkable man. For countless people around the world, he is a luminous spiritual guide. He is as well a pragmatic social activist and compassionate campaigner for human rights, for universal education, and for global peace and well-being. In this signature book, he sets out the personal experiences and deep insights that have transformed his own life and consciousness. More than that, he offers a practiced program for personal transformation that also draws from the venerable teachings of the yogic masters who continue to inspire him. Throughout the ages there have been no more insistent questions than 'Who are we?' and 'What is our purpose in living at all?' Contrarian and consistent, ancient and contemporary, Inner Engineering is a loving invitation to live our best lives and a profound reassurance of why and how we can.”—Sir Ken Robinson, author of The Element, Finding Your Element, and Out of Our Minds: Learning to Be Creative

A book to be studied, not read, to engineer your life
By Mystic Manifesting
Yesterday I cut two oranges to juice for my morning smoothie. As I was juicing one of them, I heard myself say, "This orange is BAD. It's so dry."

Option 1: "It's so dry I'm getting less than a quarter cup. Instead of needing only two oranges, I'm going to have to juice four. What a ripoff. I'm paying double for oranges. And now I have to go to the store to get more oranges. What if they're bad, too?"

Option 2: "It is what it is: a dry orange. I'll just have to juice four instead of two. Better get another bag of oranges."

Sadhguru writes, "...whatever the events and situations around you, you don't get crushed by them; you ride them." And, "To mold situations the way you want them you must first know who you are. The crux of the matter is that you don't yet know who you are. Who you are is not the sum total of accumulations you have made. Everything that you currently know as 'myself' is just an accumulation. Your body is just an accumulation of food. Your mind is just an accumulation of impressions gathered through the five senses. What you accumulate can be yours, but it can never be you... You are trying to live your life through what you have gathered, not through who you are. What's more, you are not even a hundred percent conscious of what you have gathered!"

That's what this book is about. It's about understanding your true, divine self and that everything that happens to you happens internally. Most people go through life letting external events dictate who they are and how they should feel. They spend most of their time in memories of the past or in imaginal futures, usually of a bad kind. Instead of eating from the Tree of Life, we eat continually from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and make judgments based on where our experience falls. The dry orange is evil. We also tend to discontinue growth and solidify over time as we acquire beliefs: "Belief is just like morality. People who believe something often think they are superior to others. All that happens the moment you believe something is that your stupidity acquires confidence." This is so true. The more I learn about something, the more I realize how ignorant I am.

"Every thought that arises in the mind has its roots in data you have already accumulated. The data may be gathered consciously or unconsciously...your intellect is perpetually immersed in the past. In such a state, nothing new is now possible. And so, the intellect loses its edge and becomes a trap." And, "The very seat of your experience is within you, but your perception is entirely outward bound."

So what is yoga and how does it help us evolve? I'll let the author answer.

"...the fundamental desire within every human being is for boundless expansion... When their longing finds conscious expression, we call this yoga."

"The science of yoga is, quite simply, the science of being in perfect alignment, in absolute harmony, in complete sync with existence...yoga is the science of creating inner situations exactly the way you want them."

"When you are in yoga, it means that in your experience, everything has become one. This is the essence of the science. This is also its deepest aim."

"Yoga is fundamentally aimed at enhancing your experience beyond the five senses."

"So in yoga, we learn to trust the body. We transform the physical body from a series of compulsions of flesh, blood, and hormones into a conscious process, a powerful instrument of perception and knowing."

"The entire yogic process is aimed at aligning oneself with the natural longing of life to expand in an unlimited way... Yoga means to experience the mental and physical process distinctly, not as the basis of yourself, but as that which is caused by you."

"So the quality of your life is always decided by how you experience life, not by what life offers you."

"The yogic practices, which involve postures, breath, attitudes of mind, and energy activation, are all essentially oriented toward aligning the first three layers of the body: the physical, the mental, and the energetic body. It is only in aligning them that you find access to dimensions beyond the physical--to the fundamental life energy itself."

Two years ago I basically hit rock bottom. Life seemed ridiculous and futile. I knew I had to do something or I would have to leave the planet. I didn't want to be here. So I began studying New Thought writings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I spent hours every day studying, meditating, thinking, disciplining my mind. I changed my negative thoughts into positive thoughts. I transformed myself, and I continue because I have a long way to go. I used to look back on my life and think, "What a crappy life I chose." Now I look back and think of all the challenges I have overcome and the many lessons I've learned through this difficult life. I learned to become happy.

Spiritual evolution is a discipline of learning about yourself. It takes time and effort. It is not acquiring a set of beliefs or attaching ourselves to doctrines. As Neville Goddard said, "The true test of religion is in its use, but men have made it a thing to defend."

The first time I read this book I loved it, but I couldn't review it. It was all a jumble. Too much information. Then I read it again, and still, a jumble. How do I review this? Then again, and this time I paid attention to the chapter titles to orient myself, and it took better form in my mind. Inner Engineering is not a book to be read once and set aside. It is a book to be studied, especially for someone new to the path. The keys to the kingdom are in here, but you have to recognize and wade through your own preconceptions, judgments, beliefs, and preferences.

I highly recommend this book. There's far greater treasure in here than first appears. The exercises themselves could take years to practice. And I finally understand the physical practice of yoga and how it can be used to evolve. I will leave you with one more gem that spoke to me:

"Unfortunately, most human beings are doing much the same thing: they are labeling their compulsions, their limitations, as their choices. If you can joyfully do whatever is needed in a given situation, this is freedom. But limiting yourself to doing only what you like is a horribly compulsive way to live." I choose freedom. Time to clean the bathroom. Joyfully.

Well conceived, fluidly written and easy to read, with a few elements which stretch belief
By Sandeep
[...]
Sadhguru wants to be a “dispeller of darkness.” He believes that living joyfully is not “magical” but can be done systematically, like an engineering problem. He has written the book in two parts–first he describes the landscape and then he lays out a route on how to get there.

The description of the landscape is from a perspective of personal experience. He describes how he developed as a highly curious and observant person. The first step is to know that you know nothing or very little. That opens the door to really knowing anything. He was not a disciplined student, except towards his yoga routine. He did well in a couple of businesses he started and was feeling quite confident and successful. Then one day when he was twenty five, he was heart broken, and went up on a hill to contemplate. There he was enlightened in an afternoon of reverie and dropped all that was “me and mine.” He saw all boundaries melt away. This experience transformed him physically–even the shape of his eyes, his gait. People started getting cured just by seeing him. He himself felt that he had supernatural powers. He gained many lifetimes of memory and became aware of a “million things.” He decided to go beyond the rational and logical and embrace the “intelligence of life itself.”

He realized that goal of all human endeavor is to liberate itself of boundaries. We all want to be in a state of pleasantness. Pleasantness comes from whatever we lack at that time. If you are hungry, food is what you need, if you are tired, then a comfortable bed is what you need. When we are love lorn, we need our beloved to be with us. But after all these needs are met, we still need to expand ourselves more. Therefore, the ultimate goal is to transcend all boundaries. And this feeling can only come from how we experience the world around us, not only from how comfortable is the physical world. All experience is ultimately inside of us.

Sadhguru wants people to not take refuge in destiny or karma. He wants people to have “responsibility–ability to respond to situations.” Not react compulsively, but to respond consciously. And your ability to respond is limitless. Your ability to act is limited by resources and capability, but not the ability to respond.

And how should one respond? By being in total sync with existence. Align your physical body, your mind and your energies totally to existence and that will lead to liberation and pure joy.

In the second part of the book, Sadhguru lays out a path to improve the body, mind and our energies. Body is improved by doing the physical asanas, keeping our spine erect, and slowing down our breath. Body is nourished by food, which he recommends should be vegetarian or at most fish, no higher animals. Sleep and sex are basic needs of the body and should be met so the body is at peace. It creates problems when you deny or moralize basic human drives.

When it comes to mind, the essential step is realizing the difference between you and what you have accumulated. Sadhguru recommends to learn to keep your intellect in awareness, not in memory.

There is one energy which manifests itself as everything. Kriya is the way to channel energies. But this can only happen when you are initiated by someone. This is where he talks about his Shambhavi Mahamudra which is taught in the Inner Engineering courses.

Overall, the book is an easy read, filled with entertaining anecdotes which begin “Once it happened….” Those of you who have watched him live or seen his YouTube videos know that he has an easy conversational style which is engaging and refreshing. This comes through in the book as well.

While the thoughts and discussion he presents are mostly in line with “Analytical Faith”, there are a few areas where he strains belief. For example, where he describes the power of breath. He says, “Slow it down to nine breaths–we know the language of all creatures, slow it to six you know the language of earth, reduce it to three and you know the language of creation.” He also claims power to heal himself and others. If is through a better understanding of your body and mind, it makes sense, but if it is through some deep kriya beyond the operation of body and mind, then it is “magic” and not engineering.

Phenomenal - If you wish to transform yourself and life in any way - this is the book to read.

This book is an absolute treasure. It has enhanced my understanding of life and Shambhavi on an even greater level than I originally understood. No doubt the next time I read it - it will again open me up to other levels of experience.

I am humbly grateful to have learned more than I ever could have imagined from SADHGURU.

I started Sadhguru’s 21 minute Inner Engineering daily practice called Shambhavi in 2010 ; a tool to enhance one’s life in creating inner and outer well being.
At the end of the Inner Engineering weekend course I took in August 2010, a closing video of Sadhguru was shown, Sadhguru said something to the effect “do this 21 minute practice for 40 days and see what happens, do this for six months and you will never stop” I was struck by the confidence and simplicity of which Sadhguru said this, I couldn’t understand why such an incredibly simple anyone can do practice, which even for a distracted mind only included a few minutes of meditation, could alter one so powerfully so as not to want me to stop! At the time I admit, I was in a place where I felt the need to do something about the way I was living life, …I wanted to know more, even though I was not sure what more was - what I did know, I was ready and eager to make changes to the way I was experiencing life. I yearned to modify the cyclical cycle of experiences occurring in my life, including cyclical thoughts and emotions. Since this practice seemed so basic - I decided there and then that I had to commit experience the unknown and actually see for myself - if this could this be true. I also knew this was not going to be an easy task, at a stretch; the idea of a disciplined routine of any kind other than working out was clearly not one of my best virtues. It is 2016 and I have not stopped. I can honestly say I cannot stop. The inner transformations and ever increasing state of internal and external awareness and changes have been nothing less than phenomenal and only continue to grow. This is why I do it everyday without fail, otherwise why bother. No matter how tired I am, I by pass the chatter of the mind and it’s vigorous aim to distract me, and commit. And, no matter how I am feeling before I sit down, my perception changes; I always, always feel better, relaxed yet alert, happier and energized.
This is only one of many reasons why I am humbly thankful to Sadhguru and all I have learned during these last six years.

This anthology is comprised of two major components: thirteen full-length, autobiographical essays written by persons with learning disabilities and five analytical chapters written by education and psychology scholars. Speaking in terms alternately intimate and analytical, the autobiographical essays each tell of a sustained personal encounter with the challenges and mysteries of living with a learning disability. But these autobiographies are not merely personal, concerned solely with their writers' private lives. Rather, they are also in various ways consciously analytical, offering astute critical readings of culture and society. The scholarly essays are written by such noted educators and psychologists as Lisa Delpit, Robert Kegan, and Janet Lerner. For any educator or parent of students with learning disabilities.

Learning Disabilities & Life Stories
Edited by Pano Rodis, Andrew Garrod & Mary Lynn Boscardin (Allyn & Bacon, 2001; ISBN # 0205320104)
Reviewed by Peg Dawson, NCSP
On a recent flight to France, I sat next to a French physicist, currently living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His specialty was optics and he told me he knew Ansel Adams personally. When he asked what I did for a living, I told him I was a psychologist specializing in children and adults with learning and attention disorders. His reaction, like so many adults outside the fields of education and psychology with whom I converse, was: "Don't you think that young people who claim to have these problems are, in fact, just lazy and unmotivated, and use the labels LD and ADD as an excuse?"
While in France, I began reading the book, Learning Disabilities & Life Stories, and I wished I could have given my friend the French physicist a copy of the book to read. How cavalierly he suggested that learning disorders are really excuses for character flaws. This book is a series of 13 autobiographical narratives written by adult students with learning and attention disorders. Each autobiography is different, yet each is laden with pain - many express anger and triumph as well. I have worked with students with disabilities all my professional life, and I thought I had a grasp on what it means to have a learning disability. After reading this book, I realized that my understanding of learning disabilities has been grounded in a logical-scientific-cognitive world. Students with disabilities view their learning problems through an emotional filter - and no student, it appears, grows up in America with a disability and emerges unscathed from the experience.
I have always viewed with some suspicion the argument that learning disabilities are the creation of a socio-cultural context. I have questioned this argument because I know the students I work with have genuine difficulty reading - or doing math, or paying attention, or remembering things. The point this book makes is that the impact of a disability on a student is powerfully affected by the environment in which that student finds himself or herself.
American students grow up in a world that rewards ambition, personal achievement and competition. The current emphasis on high stakes testing only accentuates this. And it's not just that teachers and parents have this bias - although this can be devastating enough, as several of the essayists in this book attest. Children, too, absorb this message from a very early age. Most of the students writing these essays endured teasing and ridiculing by their peers. And the ones who didn't still managed to learn that they were defective when compared to their classmates. Every contributor to this book had to dig themselves out of a fairly deep hole to get to the point where they could survive in college and write about the experience of growing up with a disability. In fact, a majority of students with disabilities fail to graduate from high school and only a scant 7 percent of them go on to higher education. Bruised as these writers are, they are clearly the survivors!
The book concludes with several essays written by scholars in the fields of education and psychology. While I found the autobiographies themselves the most useful part of this book, the essays by professionals were informative. It was helpful to find the socio-cultural argument amplified. One author described the stages that students with disabilities go through in dealing with their disability, a description that matched my own professional experience. But the enduring lesson I brought away from the book is how absolutely critical it is to view these students as more than a collection of disabilities. Too often, we pay lip service to the need to recognize a child's strengths as well as weaknesses. Think about it: humans develop strong self-concepts by locating and expanding their areas of competence. Robert Kegan, one of the contributing scholars, asks, "How wide a range of a child's endeavors are we willing to respect?" The task of childhood, in Eriksonian terms, is to develop "industry." This same writer states, "If we shrink the respectable 'industrial' arena down to the one domain in which children who have learning disabilities have the most difficulty, we create childhood worlds of pain."
Reading this book has led me to make new resolutions about the way I do my work: Never again (if I ever did before) will I write a psychological report that only lists a child's weaknesses. In every encounter I have with a child with a disability, I will work to identify that child's passions and talents - and to hold up a mirror so that the child - and the child's parents and teachers - can see them and celebrate them, too.

Highly recommended for individual
By Lissa Parker
Highly recommended for individual, ages 14 and up--individuals with LD, service providers, and loved ones.

In this book, thirteen college students vividly recount how LD affected their academic, social and emotional lives, and how they overcame these problems. Some of the students also suffered from ADHD, emotional problems (i.e. anxiety), and behavioral problems.

The authors have a variety of life experiences, learning problems (i.e. dyslexia, auditory processing difficulties, etc.), and perspectives on LD. Each story is inspirational in its own way. As each author attended college, the book is especially suited to inspired other LD students to consider pursuing higher education. There is a lot of intense emotion in these stories; many of the authors experienced trauma in school. I would suggest that parents discuss these stories with their child.

Here are other superb books for children and teens with learning difficulties and disabilities:

Stories From the Heart
By T. Arthur
From someone working in the school system for the past 15 years, this book, Learning Disibilities and Life Stories, touched me more than any other book on the subject. Reading the personal accounts of former students with LD, they pointed out many shortcomings of our school systems throughout the country. In reading the book, one can hope that we as educators, counselors, psychologists, and parents, will help educate all who are involved in the lives of children, especially those who are crying out for our help in the classroom. Hopefully we are changing the way we look at disabilities of any kind. This book is a constant reminder that if we do not work to help children with these disabilities, we will be losing a generation of potentially contributing adults to society. What a great tribute to these children, who are now educating us on the plight of being lost in our classrooms. I plan to share this book with fellow educators, and parents.
