An Interesting Take on Dating in the Modern World

Read Bottom Up by Neel Shah and Skye Chatham is a short novel (can be read in a few hours) about dating in the modern world of today. It’s told exclusively through emails and text messages and it really does scream of the world we live in now. Back in my days of dating we didn’t have social media. It was the phone or nothing. Yet still the same emotions and insecurities exist today – they are just communicated in a different way.
Madeline and Elliot meet at a restaurant opening and begin dating. Of course in today’s world it’s all about emailing and text messaging and we see the relationship between these two unfold in just that way. In addition to the messages between Madeline and Elliot we also have the messages between Madeline and Emily (her best friend) and Elliot and David (his best friend). You really can see from the beginning that this relationship may be doomed because these two want very different things from life. Madeline is looking for a really serious relationship while Elliot is still looking to just have fun and doesn’t really see the big deal if he doesn’t answer a text message for days.
As the relationship progresses we see the insecurities and over analyzing of the relationship. Both Madeline and Elliot are constantly copying and pasting messages and sending them to their best friends for their opinions. There is anger and a million questions but neither makes a move to just confront the situation. It’s a normal dating scenario – just taking place in today’s world where everything seems to revolve around social media. I don’t want to give away the eventual outcome of the book but I will say I was pleasantly surprised by the ending.
I enjoyed this book primarily because of the format. I enjoy books done a little differently like that. The only thing I would have liked to see was a bit more of a romantic tone to the book. I think this book will really appeal to those who are hooked on all of the social media of today and definitely those who are currently dating in it.

Times do changes the rules do no

Relationship maneuvering is one of the most difficult interactions you will ever have, whether it is one or multiple people you become involved with. There is posturing for attention, positioning for control, and best of all trying to read the other person’s thoughts at all times. The one consistent through time is the communication between the two people in the relationship and the closest of friend you share your perceptions with at length. Prior to the electronic revolution we picked up the phone and dissected every single piece of the pie, now via email and social media we do basically the same exact action with still that closest of friend and the same exacting amount of thinking every single word to death.
When Madeline and Elliot begin the relationship it is literally via email and a few texts which get ramped up to personal quick dates and interaction for a lunch or dinner. They begin to build from the bottom a relationship based on honesty and little prior baggage but we all know how that pans out. They send a text here, email there, visit around, and line by line try to analyze actions both verbal and electronic with their friends and each other. As the relationship ramps up or down there is still the discussion that must be had to make sure what is going is understood or implied; correct or wrong; or is this even going to work out.
One can never step back to the way things were done and truly you do not want to the past is not that glorious. But is the irony that we over communicate and get at times cross the line into stalking? Everyone thinks they invented the wheel but let’s face facts before we could deep dive on Facebook we drove around and followed the person we wanted to check out. Which was is creepier, you tell me

So funny!!

This is the story of a modern romance. And speaking of modern romance, Aziz Ansari has a new book out called Modern Romance, that I can’t wait to read. Read Bottom Up is told through a series of texts, e-mails, and short conversations, it is the story of Madeline and Elliot and their attempt to have a relationship. Madeline works in publishing (typical of so many female characters), and Elliot is a beginning restauranteur. They meet a restaurant opening, and things go from there. After a few “dates”, Madeline wants to believe that she and Elliot are exclusive, and he doesn’t seem to be taking the “relationship” seriously.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been on a date. This month my husband and I will celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary, and when we first met, we didn’t even have cell phones. In 2015, the way dating as depicted in this book, seems so confusing. Madeline and Elliot never seem to actually talk on the phone, and their text “conversations” make me crazy. It does make for a really funny story, though. It reminds me of how lucky I am that I don’t have to experience the uncertainty of dating in the 21st century.
In these texts and e-mails are also the conversations Madeline and Elliot have with their best friends, Emily and David. They give advice, though them seem to be just as clueless as Madeline and Elliot in relationships. They get all the details – good and bad – about their dates, and meet-ups. Elliot’s friend wants to know the intimate details of their dates, and Madeline’s friend helps to dissect their conversations.
“I appreciate the detailed play-by-play, but did you and Madeline make out? That’s really the only thing I ever want to know.”
They all seem to be messing it up as they go, and for the comedy and entertainment of the reader, it’s great. It’s the romantic comedy that’s not so romantic. In the digital age, is this what relationships have come to? I guess I wouldn’t know – and I’m so thankful for that! I recently overheard a student telling a friend about a girl he had met on Tinder. Wow! Whether or not you can relate to these characters, and their hilarious adventures in dating, you can still enjoy the story of their “romance” in the digital age.
